In the history of Houma, Louisiana, there have been many changes. The area that is now Houma was first settled by the Algonquian-speaking people around 3000 BC. In 1699, when France and England were vying for control of New Orleans, an event called the French and Indian War occurred which led to British forces occupying Houma. The British burned down much of the town in 1763 but it was rebuilt and renamed New Orleans after King George II of Great Britain. By 1800, Houma had a population of about 8500 people. The post-bellum period in Houma was marked by some heavy economic activity as well as social instability. There were several outbreaks of white flight from African Americans who were then working in local businesses. This exodus left behind a large number of African Americans who did not benefit from Reconstruction policies that aimed to create equality for all races in America. In 1915, following World War I, Houmas largest store opened with 300 employees inside and out on Rampart Street between Market and Lamar streets; it remains one of the most successful black business ventures in Louisiana history today. After World War II ended, there was significant change in Houma as well; many black families moved into the city while others worked their way up through local job opportunities or got involved with organized crime groups like the Crips and Bloods gangs which controlled much of southern Louisiana at this time. However, although life changed for many residents during these years there were also positive aspects to come out of what was otherwise a difficult period for many people living within arms’ reach of Greater New Orleans (GNO). One such aspect has been increased access to education for all citizens; since 1965, when Hurricane Katrina hit landfall on August 25th 2005, more than 60% of residents over 18 have received some form of educational assistance from various government agencies or private organizations such as Head Start or Pre-Kindergarten programs; this number is expected to increase significantly given current trends towards suburbanization throughout Greater New Orleans. Additionally, due to GNO’s location within easy access both nationally and internationally via Interstate 10 (and its multiple bypasses), Houmas vibrant cultural scene has continued to thrive despite difficulties faced by other areas during Katrina’s aftermath including traffic congestion and limited resources available for arts programming amidst budget cuts across GNO leadership circles dating back several years ago….Houmas rich culture has helped keep her afloat during times when other parts may have sunken beneath water – providing visitors with an unique opportunity to experience something often lacking elsewhere within Greater New Orleans metropolitan area….Today nearly every family residing in central downtown enjoys access either directly or indirectlyto theaters/theatrical productions/concerts/theater shows regularly staged within one block or less proximate thereto – making it possible for even those without prior experience experiencing some level if pleasure while visiting our city…..It should be noted that while much work remains needs done throughout GNO – particularly north & eastside neighborhoods adjacentto downtown - efforts are being made notwithstanding Katrina’s devastation & challenges……In short: Despite challenges faced daily by individuals living near hurricane damage sites nationwide – including Tornadoes Alley & northeast corner Of Business District - average citizens hereabouts continue vigorously functioning day & nightly…..The vibrancyous community spirit evident throughout this devastated section continues unabated even days following devastating storm events couple weeks ago

The population currently stands at 11,500 according to the 2010 census
Houma was founded by the Houma people in 1718. The city was named for Jean-Baptiste Houma, a French explorer who explored the area in 1720. The first white settlers arrived in Houma in 1814, and the city became a county seat in 1836. In 1870, Houma merged with Slidell to form a new parish. In 1898, the parish of Houma and Saint John were combined to create the current parish of Orleans. The United States Census Bureau defined Houma as a census-designated place (CDP) on July 1, 2000. As of the 2010 US Census, there were 97 residents living in CDP.
