Houma, Louisiana is a town located in the Gulf of Mexico about 15 miles southeast of New Orleans. It is known for its sugar cane and rice crops. The history of Houma begins with French colonists who arrived in 1699. The first white settlers were Baptist missionaries from South Carolina who came to live in Houma around 1824. A post office called "Houma" was established in 1831, and remained open until 1907 when it was renamed "New Orleans". In 1836, Isaac Miller founded a ferryboat service between New Orleans and Port Royal Sound which became one of the largest transportation links between New Orleans and Mobile Bayou before railroads arrived. After being forced out of his business by Union General Alvin Cushing during the American Civil War, Miller relocated his operations to Baton Rouge where he started anew as a boatman. By 1870, he had built several houses on present day Jefferson Street near what is now Roosevelt Boulevard just south of downtown Houma. In 1895, he donated land adjacent to present day Jackson Square (now part of downtown) which became home to what are today some of Houma's most important businesses including Summit House hotel and First National Bank Building (now part of BNP Paribas). During World War II many residents fought overseas; many men died as soldiers or sailors while others worked supporting their families through agriculture or manufacturing jobs back at home. Many residents returned home during Reconstruction period following VE Day/World War II when prices for goods increased because demand from abroad had decreased because America had become more prosperous since then - this prosperity helped spur development within urban areas such as New Orleans but also created challenges for rural farmers like Isaac Miller whose businesses were suddenly unprofitable due to higher prices for inputs such as labor power fetching double digits compared with 20 years earlier when wages were $2 per hour local average & necessary capital investments could have afforded much larger returns given current market conditions (& costs associated with these new technologies)). The town initially grew to serve as a trading post on the river, but soon became an important center for cotton production and trade. In 1836, Houma was designated as the capital of Terrebonne Parish, and it remained its primary city until 1959. Today, Houma is a largely working-class community with limited access to education and health care. Despite this limitation, Houma has played an important role in local history and culture. The early settlers of Houma were primarily from Normandy County, France. By 1718, most of these colonists had come overland from northern France along what is now known as I-10W. Most of these people were farmers who chose to settle near the river because it offered easy access to markets for their crops and goods. The first permanent settler in Houma was Jean Baptiste Laffite, who arrived in 1721. Laffite built his house on what is now Main Street. He began trading with Native American tribes and selling goods such as meat than he could produce himself at home. By 1724, Laffite had bought land east of downtown from Pierre Charles de la Salle for $1 per acre (0 £). As more Englishmen arrived in Louisiana during the 18th century, they began buying land around Terrebonne Parish too. In 1728, John Lawless purchased 1/4 mile (0£) of land northeast of downtown from Pierre Charles de La Salle for $1 per acre ($0 £). This purchase marked the beginning of Lawless’s successful slave trade business which would continue to be profitable until his death in 1800%. As more white men settled around Terrebonne Parish throughout the 18th century, African Americans began migrating into Louisiana too through various means including migration shipments facilitated by British traders eager to start new slavetrade routes across America's seaside colonies . One such route led from West Africa via Havana directly to New Orleans . Many black slaves were brought overland through Arkansas or Tennessee before eventually being transported by steamboats downriver to New Orleans . Slaveholders decided which areas they wanted developed based on their own personal preferences rather than any topographical considerations . After several years of effort by local officials and entrepreneurs alike , intense farming activity west of downtown resulted in increased population density within limits created by government regulation ; while development eastward went hand-in-hand with increasing traffic congestion caused by continued transportation costs associated with heavy crop production
