In 1865, Captain John J. Beavers and his crew of the USS Dredge discovered Houma Bay in southeastern Louisiana. After a season of exploration, Beavers named the bay after General Lafayette Bonaparte because he thought the bay would be more navigable from this location than any other. In 1887, Confederate forces burned down the city's market and replaced it with a shipyard to build Confederate ships. The shipyard produced many vessels for both civil and military use during the American Civil War. The shipyards closed around 1919 but were reopened in 1932 as the Houma Shipbuilding Company. In 1966-1968, Houma was host to one of the first international maritime fairs when United States Marine Corps amphibious assault helicopters took part in displays at HSC yards. The company currently produces pleasure boats, houseboats, longboats, and yachts among others

Houma, Louisiana is a small community in the state of Louisiana located on the Mississippi River. As of 2010, Houma had a population of just over 9,000 people and is the largest city in Houma Parish. The area that today becomes Houma was first settled by French colonists in 1665. The town was named for Jean-Baptiste Houma, a French general who fought in the American Revolutionary War. After the war, many refugees from New Orleans moved to Houma to escape British military occupation. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson proposed naming Houma as the site of a new U.S. capital after his victory at Yorktown (in Virginia). However, Congress never ratified the proposal and instead chose Richmond, Virginia as the new capital. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army northward into Union territory and retreat to Baton Rouge; however, he left behind an unfinished battle line which became known as "TheBattle of Baton Rouge." When Union troops arrived at Baton Rouge two days later they discovered that Ewell's army had actually turned around and retreated back upriver to Thibodaux; this event is now considered one of history's most notable strategic failures during World War II.
Houma was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne. The city was named for Saint Hubert, the patron saint of Houma. In 1803, it became a part of Orleans Parish. After Hurricane Katrina hit the parish in August 2005, the city government moved to New Orleans and the schools were closed. The population of Houma decreased from over 100,000 in 2000 to about 50,000 in 2010.
