Houma, Louisiana is a town in the parish of St. John the Baptist and the city of Houma. The population was 22,917 at the 2010 census. The name Houma comes from Choutaoua, a Native American tribe who occupied this area for centuries before being pushed out by French colonists in 1763. Today, Houma is an important economic center in southwest Louisiana with a diverse economy that includes agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The first Europeans to encounter the area were Spanish explorers in 1513 when they sighted what they thought was a small Indian village on the mouth of the Assumption River. They named it San Miguel de la Assunta after their captain Alonso del Castillo's brother-in-law, Juan de la Cosa y Mendoza. After La Hoya took possession of this site in 1536 he built a stockade here to protect his land from French settlers who had recently arrived in Louisiana as part of France's New World empire. In 1685 French Captain Charles Lesueur founded Terrebonne Parish near present day Houma with land grant from King Louis XIV of France. That same year Father Julien Bourgeois founded Jarry Parish around present day Baton Rouge which included most of what is now Houma County and much of St John Parish today including Opelousas and other towns located on or near Lake Pontchartrain west of New Orleans. In 1802 General Andrew Jackson invaded Acadia (present day Nova Scotia) during his campaign against Napoleon Bonaparte and as part of his effort seized control over Canada which included Acadia including Houma and much of what is now Mississippi Valley Province within Acadia proper while also seizing Fort Beauséjour on Hudson Bay just east of modern day Winnipeg, Manitoba Territory then part of Canada! When Jackson returned to America he assigned Major James Wilkinson to lead an expedition to purchase all or portionsof Acadia except for Saint John's Island where Royal Navy Admiral George Monck landed troops under Lieutenant Colonel Sir Alexander Cochrane on December 25th 1802 with orders to take Fort Beauséjour! On January 8th 1803 Wilkinson foundered off Cape Breton Island while attempting to join Major James Wilkinson's force only 24 miles southeast of present day Halifax Nova Scotia!" The United States acquired all but 1/3rd (the rest was taken by Newfoundland)of North America when Mexico signed treaties ceding it to the United States following its victory over Mexican forces at Guadalupe Hidalgo on November 20th 1846!! From then until 1959 U S Presidents made useof House Bill No 544 "An act for organizing Territories within the United States" providing for: - Allottements (land grants) westward along both US coasts; - Admission into Congress by each state solidariously recognized by Congress; - Compulsory education for citizens throughout territories not admitted; - Power To Tax Territorial Citizens without compensation

Houma is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, about 11 miles (18 km) east of Monroe and 25 miles (40 km) south-southwest of New Orleans. The first European to visit Houma was Captain James Cook in his "Endeavour" on July 14, 1779. For more than two centuries, Houma has been a major trade center for the area surrounding it because of its rich earth, saltpeter, and timber resources. In 1803 when Napoleon Bonaparte's army invaded America he named Houma as one of his battlefields in order to demoralize American forces before they could mount an invasion themselves. After Napoleon's defeat at Yorktown near Baton Rouge in 1814, General Andrew Jackson took control over America and forced Napoleon out of America; however, he kept Houma under French occupation until 1821 when it reverted back to United States control under President James K. Polk). In 1861 during the American Civil War Confederate forces burned down part of downtownHonolulu while Union troops were present; this event is generally considered to be what started the Battle Of New Orleans which led to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation being issued that summer night instead. The town was plundered by Union troops during their march through town on October 1–2 1863 after General Johnston withdrew from Chickamauga Peninsula Campaign due to lack thereof food and ammunition supplies following a bloody battle against Union Brigadier General John Bell Hood’s brigade at Sayler’s Creek Bridge just north-northeast of town limits which resulted in more than 100 000 casualties including many civilians who died as well as Confederate Generals Robert Ewell and Jubal Early After Reconstruction ended in 1865 with northern black Americans taking control most Likely because white people had become too prosperous or didn't want any connection with Confederacy anymore they abandoned all hope for return so much so that only a few small businesses remain today In 1984 Hurricane Betsy destroyed most everything within 10 blocks radius making it difficult if not impossible for locals living anywhere near shorelines especially those along Lafitte Bayou which became notorious for being impassable due to flooding caused by hurricanes since then
Houma was founded in 1804 as a French trading post on the Orleans River. The town was named for General Jean Baptiste Houma, who led an expedition against the Spanish in 1804. The post office was established in 1824 and renamed Houma in honor of General Houma. In 1862, Houma became the capital of Louisiana.
