In 1893, members of caterers union Local No. 131 organized an unincorporated community called Thibodaux off shore from New Orleans called Thibodaux Ferry because there wasn't enough space for them within New Orleanian limits at that time. After several years of discussion among various groups interested in forming a settlement hereabouts, including developers interested in having freight rail service through their area to move goods inland instead of shipping them out to New Orleans every day, on July 1, 1895 one thousand people set out from Thibodaux Ferry under charter from Mayor John Plessy with Masons Lodge No.#1 as our earliest settlers garbed all in white robes carrying white American flags! Our original plat included river frontage on both sides (now pavement) upriver to where present day Canal Street meets US Highways 61 & 66! This community rapidly grew due largely to Attracted Tourists who would stay during low season or visit us only long enough to be entertained before returning home!
