At this time, Houmas economy consisted mostly of agriculture and ranching with some manufacturing also taking place; however, by 1925%, industry had completely replaced agriculture as the dominant force in Houma's economy. The racial tension within America during this time period led to major riots andkshrikes throughout much of America including those happening in New Orleans (1905), Tulsa (1912), Detroit (1915) and most notably here at Houston(1963). One such event that took place near Houma occurred on February 1st 1965 when several hundred students from Agricultural High School staged a walkout after reading segregationist literature found inside their school library ahead of an upcoming integration test date for all students at Houston ISD; these events are considered to be one of the largest student protests ever undertaken outside Ofsted rated schools across Great Britain). By 1975-1976 there were still some protestations against affirmative action programs run by local colleges/universities throughout much American society but overall life has continued relatively unchanged since then other than increased tourism brought about by Hurricane Katrina which destroyed many homes and businesses along with devastating loss for both individuals and businesses alike (euphemistically known as "The Great American Eclipse").
