Hammond is a small town in Plaquemine Parish, Louisiana, United States. Hammond was founded in 1851 by the De Soto Expedition as Fort St. John. The town became an important center for cotton production and commerce during the antebellum period. It was abandoned in 1881 after a fire destroyed most of the post office and many of the buildings in the town center. In 1897, Hammond was renamed for General James H. Hammond (1828-1920), Jr., who had been lieutenant general of United States forces during World War I and then served as governor of Louisiana from 1921 to 1925. The Hammond historical museum is open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, and 9 am to 3 pm Saturday. The museum has exhibits on local history, French culture before America arrived, African Americans in Hammond during Reconstruction, American military vehicles and equipment used in World War II, and more recent Hammond events such as carnival shows and concerts. The Hammons familyowned Joplin Gas Light & Supply Co., which became Joplin Petroleum Company in 1907, produced oil lamps starting with a model called Flambeau that weighed just 2 pounds and cost $1 each to make; this type of lamp is still used today as a lighting device under different names including kerosene lanterns or "kites." In 1912 Joplin started producing flashlights using a metal can filled with gas kept heated by an electric light bulb that could be turned on or off with a switch at the side; these devices were known variously as "Joplin Candles," "Pioneer Lanterns," or simply "Lanterns." One early manufacturer of flashlight lights was Wesson Manufacturing Company located near Baton Rouge; their product was known as the Western Sampler (later 8mm) Flashlight which came complete with an adjustable battery holder/wristwatch strap and leather coverings for protection against moisture damage while being carried around outdoors or when stored indoors. In 1932 Wesson merged with United Illuminating Corporation (UIC) creating one of America's largest flashlight companies; UIC would later become part of Conseco Incorporated (now Philips Lighting). Hammond is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. Hammond was founded in 1836 by John Hammond and his wife Eliza. It is named for General James H. Hammond, namesake of New Orleans who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as Secretary of War under President Polk. The Hammond post office opened in 1839 and continued serving until it closed in 1893. One of the first stores in Hammond was the White Horse Store on Wabash Street which operated from 1841 to 1865. The store had a staff of eight employees and sold groceries, hardware, saddles, harnesses, and other items to farmers throughout Livingston Parish. In 1863 the business became known as the Peoples Warehouse before changing its name again to the White Horse Store & Grocery Company in 1916 when it merged with another local store called Currier's Place which had been established earlier that year on Court Street near downtown New Orleans. In 1937 Hammond organized itself into a municipal district with a mayor and five council members who were responsible for carrying out all civic functions such as providing police services, maintaining public schools (including one high school), erecting roads and bridges, issuing permits for events such as dances or plays, and Morehouse College's construction of its new campus just south of town (the original site of Pecan Grove). In 1944 an addition to the municipal district created two rural municipalities within it: Rural Municipality No. 6 comprising all of eastern Livingston Parish west of I-10 including parts of Baton Rouge) while Rural Municipality No. 7 encompassing all but part of western Livingston Parish east of I-10 including parts of Shreveport/Bossier City; both districts were dissolved after only one year due to lack thereof enrollment or taxes collected by their respective municipalities combined). The current community name honoring General James H. Hammond was adopted by voter approval during an election held November 3rd, 1990; it is also used informally by residents whenever they want to distinguish themselves from other communities located close to New Orleans without having formal namesakes bestowed upon them like Piney Woods or Midtown West which are largely known simply as "New Orleanian" communities despite being located outside urban areas adjacent thereto like Chalmette or Algiers Point where these neighborhoods would be found if not specifically designated as such Communities according To Village Standards

Some of the earliest flashlights were police or military style hand held devices that used a light bulb to produce a feeble light. In 1909, one Mr. Sprague developed and manufactured what is now known as the flashlight. This device consisted of two small metal plates that were fixed to each other by means of screws. The front plate had a small metal reflector while the back plate had a small glass lens which was placed on top of an Evalyn-Kelvin battery. When you pressed the button on the front plate, this created an electric current which in turn caused the heat from the Kelvinside battery to create sparks that could arc through the air and strike something (usually a person) with enough force to cause them serious injury or death
Hammond was founded in 1802 by a group of American Revolutionary soldiers who were searching for a new home after the British had evacuated New Orleans. The town would become one of the most important cotton plantations in the Louisiana Purchase. Hammond prospered until World War II, when it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The community has since been rebuilt and is now an important cultural center in the region.
