It noted that there were some hunters who used a green woodcock measured at three feet square as their game targets. From this, it can be surmised that target shooters in Hammond likely began using these small wooden pieces of furniture as targets sometime before 1824. In 1835, the first clubhouse and shooting range was built in Hammond by businessman Hosea Dillard. This structure served as the nucleus for what would become the current Empire Shooting Range complex on US 42 near downtown Hammond. In 1861, during the American Civil War, two-thirds of all gun shots fired within Mississippi took place within five miles of Jackson, including Hammond. As a result, many soldiers and civilians stopped by to shoot at various small towns and villages throughout the state while supplies lasted; this helped spark one of Mississippi’s earliest firearm hobbyist communities. When Reconstruction ended followingthe Civil War in 1865, target shooters across America quickly resumed their activities; however, none came to HAMNburg quite like William Pogue did. Mr Pogue had emigrated from Ireland to live among his new countrymen after experiencing great difficulty obtaining firearms permits for himself and his family during Reconstruction (1870-1871). He soon became an accomplished shot caller and organized several local match days at his home which attracted many locals toHammond for its excellent shooting opportunities (Fletcher 1978). Ultimately Mr Pogue helped popularize target shooting among Americans west of the Allegheny Mountains – something which he clearly enjoyed doing!

Hammond has been home to some of the most notable people in history, including General Andrew Jackson and President James K. Polk. Hammond is also known for its annual corn festival which takes place in late August or early September. Hammond was founded by French colonists in 1759 as a trading post on the present-day banks of the Mississippi River. The original name of Hammond was Château-d'Iberville. In 1836, Hammonds incorporated as a village under the name of "New Orleans." New Orleans changed its name to Hammond in 1887 after General John Dix's expedition destroyed part of what is now Baton Rouge, Louisiana and burned muchof downtown New Orleans before being forced to flee by Union forces during the American Civil War. The town was first settled by Germans who arrived around 1800 and called it "Gubenstadt." In 1827, Englishmen named William Cranch acquired land near present-day Baton Rouge and built a log cabin known as "Cranch's Fort" on nearby Prairie du Rocher where they established a trading post that lasted until 1840 when they abandoned it due to Indian hostilities. German traders soon replaced Englishmen as main sources of income and commerce in Hammond; however, interracial violence continued until well into 19th century when white people began moving out while African Americans were confined to sharecropping and other low-paying jobs with little power or opportunity for advancement except through education or workman’s compensation benefits given to them by white landowners victims of slaveryprior to their emancipation from bondage). In 1830 James Kline bought 10 acres (4 hectares) southeast of present day Hammond from Nicholas de la Mothe Cadillac for $6 per acre (2 ha). He named his plantation "Kline's Plantation," later changing it to "Hammond" after his family moved there from their native Germany about 1840. Hammond was founded in 1836 by John Hammond and his family. It became a small town after the railroad arrived in the 1860s. The Hammonds ran a grocery and post office until they sold it to Isaac Sanger in 1898. Sanger built a cotton plantation here and organized the first black Agricultural Society of Louisiana in 1907. He died in 1918, but his estate donated land for a high school and community center. The Sangers also funded a library, which opened in 1951.
