Hammond is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. Hammond is part of the New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1827 by donations from Colonel Samuel Hammond and his wife Esther. It was named for General John C. Frémont, who had come to America in 1825 and been present at the Battle of Buena Vista when Ulysses S. Grant captured Mexico City on February 16, 1847. In 1830, General Hammond donated land to build a school and cemetery there. The first post office was established in 1835; it continued operation until it closed in 1903. In 1860, Hammond became the seat of Jefferson Parish after being selected as such by a vote of the parish's trustees. The courthouse also served as a district court from 1865 until its closure in 1893. In 1870, Hammond annexed parts of St Tammany Parish to form its own government; this annexation remained effective until 1970. A cotton gin and mill were built near Hammond between 1886 and 1888 by Don Waring & Sons Manufacturing Company; they remain standing today as part of the community's history Museum complex (Hammond Cotton Gin Plant Museum). In 1896-97 James Ewing designed an imposing four-sided Moderne style concrete block house (now known as "Pine Bluff House") at 5555 Pine Bluff Road for local entrepreneur Rufus Clayborn II; Clayborn later became one of America's most prominent railroad entrepreneurs with his company Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and Chicago Great Western Railway (CGW). In 1922-23 Hugh Tingley designed an elaborate cast iron fence around much of what is now downtown Hammond thanks to funding from J P Morgan Jr.; Tingley would go on to become president/CEO Amtrak Corporation before leaving that position in 2006 after revelations about bribery at their company American Indian Gaming Association subsidiary CDM Services Incorporated . During World War II many homes were used as military barracks or storage tanks throughout Louisiana including those located within what is now downtown Hammond which include: Fort Polk Army Base (), Baton Rouge Army Base (), Shreveport Army Air Field () and Cameron Air Force Base (). After war ended local businesses began replicating these structures but with more recent construction materials such as plastic sheeting instead of metal fencing

Hammond became an important center for cotton production and rail transportation in the region. A large cotton gin was built here in the 1930s and continues to be used today. In 1954, Hammond was named one of the " Fifty Cities with a Purpose" by President Dwight D. Eisenhower for its role in economic development in the state of Louisiana.
