Hammond is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,668 at the 2010 census. Hammond was founded in 1819 by John Hammond and his family. It is named after General James Halleck, who served as the first U.S. Postmaster General. Hammond has been the home of several large corporations including Alcoa and Pepsi-Cola. The area that nowincludes Hammond was originally swampy and marshy territory inhabited by the Cajuns and other Native American tribes. In 1819, John Hammond located a post office here, naming it for General James Halleck (1786-1863), an American general who had fought in the War of 1812 and later served as U.S. PostmasterGeneral under President Andrew Johnson (1857-1865). The first settlers arrived in what is now Hammond on December 12, 1819, when Alexander McAlester built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the present site of town from which he could see all around him swampy land that would one day be developed into plots of land suitable for farming and development. In 1830, Colonel George Pickens donated two acres (0 hectares) to the town to help finance its construction; this donation became known as Pickens Promenade or "Pickens Boulevard." By 1840, settlers were property owners rather than renters; access to water was then essential for Agriculture since it supplied most of their needs for irrigation purposes; thus many homes were built without access to water supplies until relatively recently when pipelines have beeninstalled throughout much of central Louisiana allowing residents easy access to potable water whenever they need it while also reducing flooding risks during times of high water levels
