Hammond, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana on the eastern edge of the parish of Orleans. The population was 7,591 at the 2010 census. Hammond is home to the Hammond-Amarillo Ammunition Plant and Cummings Oil Refinery. The plant produces gasoline and diesel fuel for automobiles and other engines. The refinery also processes crude oil and natural gas liquids into products such as gasoline, heating oil, jet fuel, and asphalt. The ammunition plant was started in 1907 by George Cummings. It produced shells for then-U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders military campaign against Spanish forces in Cuba that year. In 1942 it became part of American munitions manufacturer Boeing corporation when Boeing bought Cummings' share in the plant for $237 million dollars ($ today). After World War II, Boeing discontinued production at the plant due to economic reasons but kept it open until 1973 as an operating research center for their new company Aeronautical Systems Division (ASD). In 1990 when Airbus began producing Airbus jets there were plans to close the munitions factory but this plan was foiled because Boeing still owned a majority stake in ASD which allowed them to keep some jobs while AeroEADS took over most of production at the Arsenal building adjacent to NASHVILLE airport where they manufactured those planes until 2001 when they moved all production out of NASHVILLE altogether and made Memphis their primary manufacturing base although they continue to produce some jets here under contract from Aeronautical Systems Division).
