The Hammond Air Force Base was established in 1941 as a base for the United States Military Academy at West Point. The Pope Airport was also established in 1941 as a base for Catholic University School of Aviation and Technology flying students to Tulane University in New Orleans. According to the 2010 census, there are 9,788 people living in Hammond city limits alone or within 1 mile of it who identify themselves as being "Hispanic Americano." The area now known as Hammond was originally part of the Tensas Parish area. In 1861, Hammond was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant after he won an important battle at Gettysburg. Hammond's importance as a military and economic center declined in the early 20th century; however, it has regained some significance in recent years as a bedroom community for Baton Rouge.
