Hammond, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 13,711 at the 2010 census. Hammond is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The name Hammond comes from Hammond's Landing on the St. Charles River near Baton Rouge in 1765 after General James Hammond and his brigade crossed over from Canada to fight for King George III during the American Revolution. Hammond's Landing served as a depot for goods traveling upriver to New Orleans from the Mississippi River region. In 1802, General Samuel Latham founded what became known as the City of Madisonville in present-day Monroe Parish when he moved his headquarters from Hammond to that location after taking control of Alexandria Parish following a victory by Ulysses S. Grant against Napoleon Bonaparte at Iuka on October 20, 1802. The city was named for Thomas Moultrie (1751–1824), an American politician who owned property adjacent to what would later become downtown Hammond and served as its first mayor; Moultrie had also been deputy governor of Louisiana under Governor Claiborne Jackson during the early years of Reconstruction and later became president pro tempore of the Senate (the upper chamber of Louisiana state government). In 1836, John Bogue formed a company with other investors to prospect for oil in what would become Jefferson Parish but found no oil until 1840 when they discovered "Boggy Point" about southeast of downtownNew Orleans on Lake Pontchartrain; this site has since been converted into Jack Kerouac Park and is now home to Naval Air Station Mobile Bay. On December 12, 1860, General Beauregard issued Order No 1 giving instruction that all citizens must arm themselves against possible Indian raids anywhere within their jurisdiction; this order led to ethnic tensions between white settlers and Native Americans which have persisted through various forms of discrimination ever since. However, due to its high cost and limited range compared to cannonballs fired from ships at sea, gunpowder was not widely adopted until the 16th century when English traders brought it overland into Europe. Hammond is one of the oldest towns in Louisiana and was founded by French colonists in 1768. Hammond became a U.S. town on December 12, 1871, when it was included within the limits of New Orleans. Hammond is named after General John Hammond who led American forces during the American Civil War and later served as Vice President under Abraham Lincoln. The first store in Hammond opened on December 12th, 1871 and soon began to grow quickly due to its location close to important military installations like Alexandria Barracks and Fort Hamilton which were also frequented by traders from neighboring states such as Mississippi and Alabama.
