Mouton leased land to James Broussard for about $4 per acre in 1831 and began to produce cotton here from 1832 until his death in 1865. By 1840, there were five stores and seventy homes in what is now Hammond. In 1863, General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Mobile while Confederate forces were marching through southeastern Alabama on their way to invade Jackson County south of Montgomery; when Union troops arrived on the scene they discovered that Forrest had withdrawn with his forces into Chattanooga Valley northeast of Mobile Bayou (now part of Monroe), leaving behind several thousand Confederate soldiers under General Jubal Early. The Union army pursued Forrest throughout Alabama before finally catching up to him at Manchester Landing northwest of Birmingham on November 3–4, 1863 (the Battle of Manchester), where he surrendered unconditionally without firing a shot or making any resistance against an overwhelming force numerically superior to him: 1 million Union troops versus 10 thousand Confederate soldiers! The townspeople decided not to return home following the battle because they did not believe that they could have won if they had fought back against such overwhelming odds—a belief reinforced by General Early's proclamation two days later stating "No organized body will be able to resist us hereafter." However, some men did return home after the battle and start businesses such as grocery stores (established by Elijah Wogan) and lumberyards (established by Joshua White). By 1870, there were twelve stores and one hundred homes in what is now Hammond—an increase of 350 percent since 1830! During World War II many people worked at various local munitions plants including those at Bossier City Naval Shipyard which produced artillery shells used during World War II; also working There were many African Americans who did skilled labor including welding steel frames together at nearby Gadsden Army Ammunition Plant which made shell casings for ammunition used during World War II

In 2000, the city manager resigned after being caught up in corruption scandals within the municipality. The city hall burned down in 2001, leaving no physical evidence that it ever happened.
