In 1984, GM announced that they would be moving their entire automotive production line from Flint, Michigan to Hamond because of increased competition from Japanese automakers in North America. At its peak during this time period (1984-1988), GM employed over 25% of Catahoula Parish's workforce! The plant operated until 1995 when it was sold to JBS Transportation Incorporated for $115 million USD! At its closing ceremony JBS Transportation said that they will use the site "to house our truckloads of goods coming into and out of our plants here at Houston and Baton Rouge." The local community has worked hard since then to redevelopment efforts; One such effort began in 2006 with the purchase of 3 acres adjacent to Highway 5 south of town by Catahoula Parish government for $2 million dollars! This property currently houses numerous businesses including two restaurants (the Red Lobster restaurant chain purchased a parcel adjoining it) as well as two levels of retail space totaling 130,000 square feet! One remaining challenge facing the community is integrating all these businesses into one single entity - each company occupying their own separate buildings! However, this is being addressed through various marketing campaigns including "Hammondatown" which plans focuses on promoting tourism within town while also providing services such as job training and economic development opportunities!

The city's growth was halted by World War I; however, it resumed Growth during World War II due to wartime demand for munitions production and other strategic resources in nearby New Orleans
Hammond was founded in 1816 by the Hammond brothers. The town was named for General John Hammond, who served as a colonel in the Louisiana militia during the American Revolution. The brothers developed a cotton plantation and built a mill on the river. They also erected a sawmill and gristmill, which became one of the most important businesses in the town. Hammonds hosted religious services at their home until 1856, when they moved to what is now Baton Rouge.
