When New Orleans was founded in 1785 by Spain under French control as Metropolis of New Orleans, it included all land between Hudson Bay and Mobile River except what is now Vernon Parish including parts of Hammond and Stroudsburg areas today. The Spanish built a fort at what is now called Gormley's Ferry on April 20, 1790 during the Opium Wars with Britain over trade restrictions with China starting shortly thereafter Spain abandoned its claim to this area upon its acquisition by Great Britain following its victory over France at Yorktown in 1781 known as "the Glorious Revolution". Afterward many residents moved away due to disease brought over by American colonists who arrived during and after the Revolutionary War; however some chose to stay because they believed that their new nation would be better than France although they had no say in government affairs since they were not subject to French rule like Catholics or Native Americans who did have such rights).
