Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 9,711 at the 2000 census and it grew to 10,824 in 2010. Gretna is the seat of government for Jefferson Parish and is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Gretna were French missionaries who arrived in 1718 and established anmission there from St. Bernard’s Parish on the south side of Lake Pontchartrain. A post office called Gretna was established in 1814, and remained open until 1857. The town began as a plantation community with slaves brought over by slaveowners to work their plantations near present-day Lafayette and Baton Rouge. By 1830, most slaveholders had been replaced by freedmen or their children who owned land around hereabouts but continued to import slaves for labor on their own plantations until emancipation in 1865. In 1870 when Lafitte bought 6,000 acres (2 km²) around present day Gretna from his brother Samuel Forney for $3 million dollars he had developed this area into one of America's leading cotton production areas with more than 1 million bales valued at $100 million during Reconstruction period alone because so many men had left slavery to become professionals like engineers and doctors following Civil War experiences that gave them new hope for Reconstruction which was code name "Emancipation". Gretna, Louisiana was once a thriving slave town and early settler community. The area now known as Gretna was first inhabited by the Caddo people, who were considered natives of the region. At some point, French colonists moved into what is now Gretna from adjacent present-day Arkansas. By 1785, the local Native American tribe had been forced to abandon their land in what is now Gretna due to white encroachment. The area became a part of Spanish Louisiana after the Mexican-American War ended in 1848. The United States acquired portions of Spanish Louisiana in 1853 and ceded it to France in 1870 following its defeat in the American Civil War. After France's withdrawal from both countries, African Americans began arriving here beginning in 1861. Most residents were freed during Reconstruction; however, a small number remained enslaved until 1898 when President Grover Cleveland granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or color. In 1895, an act passed by Congress designated Gretna as the seat of government for both East Baton Rouge Parish and West Baton Rouge Parish within Rapides Parish which included most of what is today Gretna. In 1907, an act creating East Baton Rouge and West Baton Rouge parishes made Gretna an independent municipality with its own police force and budgeting authority. During World War II, much activity took place at Naval Air Station (NAS) Algiers which lies just outside present day Gretna on Lagrange Island off the coast of southeastern Louisiana. This airstrip served as a main training ground for Navy pilots during World War II and also supported other military activities such as minesweeping operations off New Orleans Bayou Lafourche River between 1942-1945 After Hurricane Katrina struck landfall on August 29th 2004 many businesses closed up shop due to lack of insurance or damage that had not been covered by FEMA/the state government despite promises made before Katrina hit about this being done However there are still many businesses open that are run by volunteers without any corporate sponsorship
