It is the 9th most populous city in New Orleans metropolitan area and home to the University of New Orleans. The name Gretna comes from an English place-name meaning "forty miles below." By 1810, it had become an important fur trading center due to its proximity to Paradouche Bay on the Mississippi River. In 1811, General David Moultrie's army burned down Gretna after retreating from Mobile Bay during their Battle of Pensacola. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson's army reached Gretna after crossing the Iberian Peninsula and marched into what is now central Louisiana. At that time, it was one of only a few American settlements in eastcentral Louisiana. The first white settlers in what became Gretna were French Catholics who arrived around 1785 as part of a drive by France to control new territory west of the Appalachian Mountains. They built cabins on land they acquired from Native Americans and started trading with other tribes before moving out in1804 when Lafayette founded Acadiana (now Baton Rouge) as a separate colony for Catholic refugees from Great Britain’s Napoleonic Wars. After less than two years, all but three students at St Mary’s College (the present day USU) left for Acadiana because there wasn’t enough space for them in contemporary LSU campus buildings near Notre Dame Cathedral.–A year later enrollment had increased to 600 and by 1830 nearly 2000 people lived here including 350 men working at various mills while others built homes or moved here when Acadiana became a slaveholding society.–During this period papermaking also became established as an important economic activity with sawmills being developed early on which produced high quality lumber–By 1840 cotton production had begun thanks to flooding alongriver caused by heavy rains brought on by Hurricane Katrina.– Papermaking reached its peak between 1840-1860 with some mills producing up to 50 barrels/day while local economies grew through smuggling activities related both to trade with England where rice was exported and transportation issues along riverboat routes

In 1814, when war with Spain began to develop into a full-blown conflict, General James K. Polk ordered General Felix Rodriguez to take control of all New Orleans defenses and march against Spanish forces at Baton Rouge. Rodriguez failed to reach his destination due to poor weather conditions and returned home without accomplishing his mission; instead he surrendered Baton Rouge to Spanish forces on December 8th. On January 14th, 1870 an act of Congress approved establishment of Caldwell Parish within Jefferson Parish; this move increased the number of parishioners from 1202 at the beginning of that year to 2,451 by 1880. By 1900 Gretna had grown somewhat but still recorded only 1 resident per 1,000 residents in Jefferson Parish which made it one-tenths as populous as Metairie and less than one-eighth as populous as New Orleans proper combined! Despite this limited success and lackadaisical approach to growth some people did manage to build up businesses including Shipbuilding Company which built shrimpboats for local fishermen during prohibition years before being shut down in 1933; also note that gas station operated out Of Shop so customers could fill up their cars with gasoline purchased from feed store next door! The last grocery store opened its doors In 1984 closed because it was destroyed by fire
