Gretna is a small town in Louisiana, United States. The population was 697 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Ascension Parish and part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gretna was founded in 1736 as an alluvial flat on the then-nascent river delta near present day Baton Rouge. By 1800, it had become a thriving trading post with a store and 100 residents. In 1814, Captain James Cook passed through this area on his way from England to New Orleans, stopping in Gretna for supplies before continuing his journey southward. A plaque marking Cook's landing at what is now Gretna National Battlefield was erected in 1984. In 1815, General Isaac Brock encountered Native Americans here during his march across Louisiana en route to take possession of what are now Arkansas and Texas. He destroyed their village but left its remains standing today as evidence of their resistance against European colonialism Brock's forces were routed by French forces in what is now known as Battle of Lake Charles on July 6, 1815 and he retreated back into range of Indian attacks until August 12 when he finally withdrew completely leaving behind over 1,500 casualties including 400 Canadian soldiers under Lieutenant Colonel John Hervey which thrust Bretons into open warfare with one of America's greatest military successes After the American victory at Waterloo (1805), General James Hogg took command of British troops defending Louisiana and ordered Brock's men to retreat eastward towards Mobile Bay Captain John Smith discovered land off shore here on November 3rd 1788 while sailing out from Havana Mexico bound for West Point bearing news that there appeared to be new landsmass beyond CapeFlorida - naming it Newfoundland after himself - soon thereafter some 9 miles distant from town given that no land lay within sight or sound A wharfage warehouse fronting Main Street was built about 1800 along with other buildings around it including a blacksmith shop/gallery / jail/marketplace etc., used by merchants for storage purposes until 1865 when CPR arrived providing more efficient transportation methods for goods brought into town via ship rather than roadsteads established throughout local region During WWII two USAAF airfields were built adjacent to each other just outside town: Glenn Rhein Airfield west side (1940) and Prairie Wing Airfield east side (1945). Both fields were closed down after WWII although remnants remain today as agricultural fields
