Garrett developed and patented a muzzleloader rifle that used sound to guide the hunter down his prey. This rifle was unique in that it had both ears protected by leather earrings. The first shooting galleries were established in Gretna to accommodate this new type of weapon and hunting technology. Gretna was also home to the first shotgun sporting event in America on November 17, 1875 when over 100 farmers and hunters from across Louisiana gathered at the old courthouse for a shotguns competition. At this event, Captain David Blanchard of the United States Infantry fired 11 rounds from a Winchester Model 1872 rifle at a target set up on an elevated platform just outside of town hall. The event is still remembered as one of the earliest Shotgunning Competitions in America! In 1907, SHPF formedsoftball Association Incorporated which became one of the most successful sports organizations in Louisiana during that time period with multiple state championships throughout their years including 3peat victories in 1951-1953! Their success led them to establish their own building which would house their softball stadium until it burned down in 1984! Gretna, Louisiana is a city in southern Louisiana. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Catahoula Parish and is included within the Jackson–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gretna was founded by French colonists in 1718 on an island in Lake Pontchartrain that they named "Isle de la Cité". The first town in what is now Gretna was called "Port Royal" because English traders used it as their point of departure for trading with the local Native Americans. In 1804, the British forces burned down part of Port Royal and took over the town, rename it "Gretna". In 1805, Claiborne Parish was created from parts of Orleans and Jefferson parishes; Gretna became part of Claiborne Parish. By 1813, most of Catahoula parish had been added to Gretna; however, a small part remained within Claiborne until 1827 when it became part of Jeff Davis Parish. In 1865, much of Catahoula parish including Gretna were transferred from Jeff Davis to Union County when that county was created from parts of St. Tammany and Jefferson parishes. At its peak during World War II (1939-1945), Catahoula parish had a population exceeding 100,000 people but due to natural attrition (the death rate among African Americans kept soaring) only about 60% remain today; this mainly reflects its rural character with few large businesses or professional institutions outside the community. The current mayor is Leroy McKnight who took office on January 1st 2009 after serving as Mayor Pro Tem since 2006

Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Rapides County, Louisiana. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Gretna were French settlers who arrived in 1765 and named it Baie des Allemands (Bay of Germans). In 1803, Captain John Smith's Expedition passed through this area on their way to what is now Baton Rouge. The town was founded by General James K. Polk on November 5, 1853 as a post office called "Laurence" after General Lafayette who had led American troops during the Mexican–American War. The post office was renamed "Gretna" on December 12, 1853 after Brigadier General Lafayette's widow, Marie-Thérèse de la Fayette Hébert de la Motte Parish (née Duchesneau), daughter of François Duchesneau d'Enfants du Lac and Élisabeth Agathe Giraud de La Rochefoucauld. On January 16, 1861, Confederate Major General Pemberton attacked Fort Claiborne near Gretna with 813 men under his command but failed to take it because Union forces blockaded the fort from behind while he made his escape across the river into Illinoisvia Mobile Bay. In 1865/1866 Captain George Armstrong Custer fought at Camp Hood near Gretna againstUnion forces commanded by BrigadierGeneral Philip Sheridan which resulted in one dead and four wounded Custer among other engagements that day including Battle of Missionary Ridge which also resulted in six killed and twenty wounded Union soldiers including two officers A bandstand that still stands today was built by local citizens during Reconstruction as a place for dances and concerts with local bands playing until well into the 20th century when electricity became available providing power for lights.. A branch library opened at Gretna High School on October 7th 1912 serving students from both sexes until 1965 when it moved to its current location adjacent to Grambling Technical College used since 1922 . During World War II there were three bombing raids over Gretna conducted by V-2 rockets from nearby Hill 442 which destroyed about sixty homes without causing much damage though some windows were smashed
Gretna was founded on Nov. 12, 1836 by a group of men from the Upper Mississippi Valley. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had been president when the town was founded. After passing through several different names, Gretna became known as "The Landing" in 1881 because of its location at the mouth of the I-10 highway and its access to boats that transported goods upriver.
