When the University of Louisiana at Lafayette began its self-defense program in the late 1940s, it was a small but inspired effort. The school’s then-director of physical education and safety, John Sisemore, had been working on developing a system to arm students with handguns for personal protection during classes and other activities. In the early days of self-defense handgun training, there were few weapons available that could be used effectively in defense. The only option was to rely on one’s own strength and agility to defend oneself. However, this option was not always feasible or safe. In order to provide an effective defense against attackers, Sisemore developed the first concealed carry program at UL Lafayette. This inaugural course taught participants how to safely store their firearms and use them when necessary – an important step in ensuring that everyone has access to these powerful tools for personal defense! Since then, UL Lafayette has participated in several other successful concealed carry programs across America. Gretna, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, in the central region of Louisiana. The population was 14,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by fur traders in 1765 as Little Rock and named for General James Fenton, who had taken control of the area from French colonists during the Seven Years' War. In 1804, Fenton's son-in-law built a home known as "The Hermitage" on Mount Carmel Court within what is now Gretna Center. The original settlers were planters and slave owners who cultivated cotton, sugar cane, rice and other crops while raising livestock. In 1830, when New Orleans became an American city under President Andrew Jackson, two sections of Gretna were annexed to make up the new city limits: East Gretna (now Midway) to the east and West Gretna (now Montrose) to the west. As American cities grew larger over time they annexed smaller villages until all but one small community in Jefferson Parish – Gretna – was annexed into New Orleans in 1853. That consolidation left only a handful of small rural communities scattered throughout southern Jefferson Parish without their own municipal government or schools; these communities formed the nucleus around which future growth would occur in Gretna. Most important among these early pioneers were John Bogue Sr., grocer and postmaster; his sons John Bogue Jr., attorney general; Daniel Heman & John Ewing Post Office; Julius McCormick Insurance Co.; Jens Jensen Sawmillinery Co.; Nelsons Shoes Store; Harry Dillard Ford dealership; Aitken Oil Refining Works No 2]; Wills Drug Store & Pharmacy Ltd.; Mrs Gertrude Beauman’s Piano Shop & School; Mrs Hill’s Livery stable). These men laid down roots that would continue through many changesover time: The first school opened in 1892 ( Refreshment Stop School); first automobile dealership opened up shop on I-10 south of town on November 16th 1926 (Ford Motors Incorporated); African Americans began working at local businesses beginning with Aitken Oil Refining Works No 2 starting out asbutchers... eventually becoming welders,... gas station owners etc.). After World War II most businesses closed down due to technological advances such as television screen repair shops...] In 1951 Baptist Church moved from its original site on Avenue A just north of Canal Street to what is now Main Street where it has been serving parishioners ever since...As Independence Day approaches we take this opportunity to remember those that have made our community what it is today including Rev Dr JW Page Pastor Reverend Dr Harold Spearman Founder
Gretna, Louisiana was founded on February 4, 1790, by French colonists. The town was named after General Louis-Jacques D'Angeline. The first post office in Gretna was established on July 1, 1824. In 1836, the legislature of Louisiana changed the name of Gretna to New Orleans and the original courthouse burned down in 1837. New Orleans annexed Gretna in 1849 and the town lost its charter as a municipality until it regained it in 1898. In 1886, Mayor John Bughin persuaded city commissioners to rename their main street " avenues" in memory of then-Governor Alexander Cushing and other local heroes who had died during the American Civil War.
