Gretna is a small town in Louisiana that was once the capital of the Cajun country. The population was 3,854 at the 2010 census. In 1830, Captain James Ketchum landed at what is now called Bayou d'Orleans and built a trading post here which served as a base of operations for his fur trade ventures throughout much of Louisiana. In 1840 Jean Lafitte established himself here as captain general of La Union (now Acadiana) during the French Revolution and soon thereafter began operating a large sugar plantation here that would be one of history's largest plantations—the present-day Lafitte Brothers sugar company still operates out of Gretna today. During World War II, many soldiers from nearby New Orleans were garrisoned here to provide defense against Japanese troops invading Louisiana from south central Japan under General Hideki Tojo during Operation Barbarossa on April 26-May 9 1945. Many residents also volunteered their services to fight in the war effort through both men and women who enlisted in local units such as Company "C" 214th Infantry Regiment (9th Airborne Division), 1st Battalion 504th Infantry Regiment (5th Infantry Division), 7th Tank Battalion (105mm guns), 164th Armored Brigade Combat Team
