The name "Gretna" was derived from an early parish seat in Rapides Parish called "Beauregard." In 1804, when Orleans Parish was created from Rapides and Jefferson Parishes, Beauregard became the parish seat for all of what is now Gretna Parish. The most significant events in Gretna's history include: In 1881, a post office called "Gretta" was established within present-day Gretna; In 1898, a school named "Gretsch High School" opened in downtown Gretna; In 1904, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much ofigator hunting country nearby and made it necessary to construct levees to protect the community; In 1955, Hurricane Betsy destroyed much agricultural land surrounding Gretna; and In 1966, construction began on what would become the current courthouse complex.

Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of St. Bernard in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gretna has been inhabited by humans since pre-historic times according to archaeological evidence found near the community and there are remains of ancient cedar trees dating back to 7500 BC. The area that now makes up Gretna was first settled by French colonists in 1736 as part of what became St. Bernard Parish. The original name for Gretna may have been "Joliette." In 1814, when a treaty was made between France and Great Britain, Gretna became part of New Orleans and eventually absorbed other settlements around it including Gonzales and Spanish Fort on the Mississippi River which had been founded in 1763 by Captain José Félix de la Hoya y Costilla as an outpost on land grants given to Spanish settlers in present day Jefferson Parish along with present day Lafayette Parish). At this time, Gretna consisted of about 100 people with 10 or 11 homes built mostly from logs collected from local cedar trees cut down during winter months while water levels were low due to heavy rains upstream. By 1830, however, most residents had moved away due to various reasons such as lack of farmland or inadequate infrastructure for farming; many remaining until after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 which destroyed much of downtown Saint Bernard Parish including Gretna’s civic center and nearly all its buildings save one (the old courthouse still standing today). During World War II, Gretna played an important role providing supplies to local military bases across Louisiana; some examples include ammunition dumps at Grand Pré Naval Air Station and US Army Garrison Fair Oaks south of town as well as supplies being trucked into New Orleans through Canal Street just prior to landfall on August 29th 1944 followed by extensive damage done throughout northeast Louisiana resulting in over 1 million tons (approximately 2% total) worth Of munitions being destroyed or damaged beyond repair within 24 hours after landfall causing $5 million worth ($100 million adjusted)in property damage statewide alone not including automobiles lost or destroyed outright but also includes items like boots and artillery shells left out on open ground where they detonated creating huge plumes that could be seen for miles carting materials away from impacted areas days later
