Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of St. Tammany Parish in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gretna was founded by French colonists in 1764 as a trading post on Bayou Teche and became an important fur-trading center during the 18th century. The town was renamed Gretna after General John Forbes, who led American forces against Mexico in 1812 and1813. The first African American to live in Gretna was slave trader Thomas Hinson in 1823. The early years of post-World War II Gretna were difficult due to wartime destruction of infrastructure and natural disasters such as floods that ravaged the area every few years for many years thereafter; nevertheless, through hard work and community spirit, Gretna has bounced back and regained some semblance of its prewar prosperity over time. Today, Gretna offers a variety of cultural attractions including galleries, art museums, jazz clubs, restaurants and theaters which attract visitors from all over New Orleans County and beyond. Many homes were lost including those of Mayor John Fenton and City Treasurer Wm Henson. The following year saw an effort to rebuild with support from local businesses and citizens. This rebuilding process led to new buildings such as the Bank of America building which is now home to the Gretna Museum. Today, Gretna is a thriving community with a strong cultural heritage that has been preserved through its history and economy. It is also home to several major businesses including Monsanto Company which manufactures agricultural products; Lockheed Martin Corporation which manufactures missiles; ExxonMobil Corporation which operates oil refineries; Texaco Incorporated which provides fuel services; and Union Carbide Corporation who manufactures Hazmat materials used in industrial processes.

By 1836, Gretna had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1852, the state of Louisiana granted incorporation to Gretna with a population of 535 residents. The town prospered until the Great Depression caused a decline in business activity and poverty. In 1935, the city of Gretna merged with neighboring Livingston to form one municipality. Gretna is located at (9gradient n 0738' W), on the banks of the Assumption River. It lies within Orleans Parish and is bordered on the south by Livingston Parish and on the north by Jackson Parish. The Assumption River forms part of Gretna's border with Jackson Parish. According to USGS data, Gretna has an area of , making it an almost total dryland community . However, according to local lore, there may be small amounts of groundwater present in certain areas due to underground reserves that have been exposed during construction projects or natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods
