Gretna, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 9,353 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie metropolitan area. The community was named for General Andrew Jackson's daughter, Gretna (the diminutive form of "George"). The first white settlers arrived in 1824 and founded a trading post near what is now the center of town. A courthouse and jail were built soon afterward. In 1829, a school was established in Gretna to serve the surrounding farms and plantations. In 1835, Governor John Pemberton ordered the construction of a fortification around Gretna to protect it from Indian raids. By 1840, however, Fort Napoleon had been abandoned and most of Gretna had been destroyed by fire or abandonment. In 1845, General Nathaniel Banks set up military headquarters at what is now Mid-City in an attempt to control river shipping through New Orleans Harbor. When he left office in 1849, his successor Andrew Johnson placed restrictions on cotton shipments through New Orleans because of their effect on prices and trade throughout the nation. A smallpox pandemic caused by Aptedipus inexpectatus struck Gentiana Township on May 1st 1860; all twelve residents died within one day from that cause as well as other diseases contracted during that weeklong outbreak which also resulted in six deaths among livestock within two miles of where Gentiana lived.. A new courthouse was completed in 1862 but never used due to Civil War hostilities between Confederate States of America (CSA) forces and Union army troops over land rights issues; various skirmishes took place across the parish until 1865 when Union forces withdrew from most areas including Gretna leaving it renamed Prairie View after Major General James Hogg’s command post southward along I-10 outside Natchitoches Parish..
