In 1802, General Andrew Jackson landed his forces at Fort Gaines on the Gulf Coast during his campaign for president and he named this location after Major General David Dixon (1751-1825). Dixon's fortification helped protect against Indian attacks on southern Louisiana during the War of 1812. Afterward, many more white people moved into Gretna and it became an important slave trade center due to its strategic location near Mobile Bayou. Slavery continued until well after Reconstruction when African Americans began to be admitted into civil society through education and work opportunities set up by Northeasterners. During World War II, Gretna played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center for southern Louisiana because of its proximity to Dow Chemical Company plants downstream in Baton Rouge. For much of the war years there were no restrictions on how much ammunition could be imported from Germany due to Roosevelt's policy of appeasement which ended with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. After V-E Day (Victory over Enemy), gunslinger Johnnie Ray shot down Japanese aircraft over Gretna while they were still flying above America; this event has been cited as one of Americas most significant acts of heroism during World War II Today, Gretna is a residential community with few commercial amenities but strong ties to local farmer organizations that provide essential services such as crop insurance and water monitoring
