Afterward, many people from eastern New Orleans moved into Gretna as well; these refugees included some of America's earliest African Americans who would later form a generation of firefighters known as "The Black Panthers." In recent years, Gaston Avenue has been renamed James Meeks Boulevard in memory of Mayor James Meeks who was killed in a car accident on October 16th 2006 while driving his mayoral campaign van through Gatlinburg Township where he resided for over 30 years prior to his death at age 88 years old. There are currently plans underway to rename all major roads within Jefferson Parish after mayors or other important figures deceased since Katrina struck (eighty percent or more have already been approved).

Gretna, who served as commander of Union forces during the American Civil War. The first settlers in what is now Gretna were French colonists who founded the village of Houma on May 8, 1759. The area that would be Gretna was originally called "Natchitoches" by the local Native Americans and it was known as "Mogulnia" by Spanish explorers arriving in 1699. In 1803, President James K. Polk dedicated a land grant to General John Cushing for his efforts in suppressing Indian resistance to United States rule during the Mexican-American War. This tract of land became known as Cushings Barren Land Act No. 12 (1803). In 1836, Governor Claiborne Pell announced plans to move the county seat from Natchitoches to Gretna because he felt that it could serve more people because of its location on an important trade route between New Orleans and Texas City (now Brownsville). On December 14, 1836, voters approved a resolution authorizing Mayor John Pemberton to purchase 5 acres (20 hectares) of swampy ground at what is now Sixth Street and Iberia Avenue from Ackerstown Plantation owner Isaac Ackerstown for $2 per acre ($40 per hectare). The total cost amounted to $8 million dollars which would later be paid off through taxes generated from agricultural production and other activities conducted in Gretna over those years... On November 3rd, 1840, Ulysses S Grant arrived at Baton Rouge with 10 000 soldiers under his command after spending two years leading troops against Mexico's forces invading Texas - one campaign that earned him fame among America's official enemies as "The Great conqueror". As partSigned by then Missouri Governor James Kansa on February 22nd were General Order No 1 & 2 commanding all military operations along both banks of Mississippi River; these orders authorized brigades numbering fifty men each to cross over into Texas & pursue Mexican army retreating from San Antonio de Bexar; these brigades soon became known as cavalry divisions... A post office called Gretna had been established in 1843 but failed because no one wanted to move there because they thought it would become uninhabitable due to lack of water and soil availability. By 1870 there were only six residents living here while eight stores/ivery businesses provided goods and services tobers throughout rural Lafourche Parish including Compostelle & Plaquemine Counties west of town limits..
