In 1837, after being incorporated as a village under Spanish rule, Gretna became an American city with a population of 508 people when General Andrew Jackson moved his forces into central Louisiana during the War for Independence. After Louisiana achieved its independence from Spain on January 3, 1812, Gretna became part of Jefferson Parish until 1861 when it became an independent republic under Napoleon III following France's defeat in World War I. During World War II many Japanese Americans were detained here because they were suspected of being spies or collaborators with Japan; however no charges were ever made against them or any other residents of Gretna during that time period. On September 26th 1944 over 1 million WWII veterans who had served in Europe arrived in New Orleans via steamboats off the coast of Hurricane Katrina; most lived within walking distance of downtown New Orleans but some lived near Indianola Beach where they could take their boats ashore for loading onto buses back into LAX (LAX actually handled all those repatriations). The community underwent major reconstruction following Katrina which included new housing developments such as Vista Ridge developed by Hines Companies; also built were schools including Episcopal School (now Griggs Middle School), Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School (now Stritch-Robinson Elementary School), Central High School (now Scottrade Center), Gretna Senior High School (now Brockman Senior High School), Veterans Affairs Medical Center – East Campus relocated from Metairie to this community due torising costs associated with Superstorm Sandy relief efforts; also created were several businesses such as Lowe's Hardware & More online retailer established here along with several restaurants including Joe's Crab Shack BBQ Joint & Grill opened up by veteran restaurateur Donnie Yencky followed later by Rudy's Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria Inc.; also opened up was Home Depot while several grocery stores closed including Kroger before reopening subsequently becoming HEB Inc.. As Katrina approached various residents chose either stay put or evacuate depending upon their personal situation; many women took advantage of local charities set-up throughout parish like Women’s Aid Organization which provided food assistance parcels stuffed full of groceries while families waited outside for buses taking them away from #HurricaneKatrina communities like coastal Mobile County through South Mississippi ultimately arriving in Baton Rouge days later prior to landfall there on August 29th 2005 just two weeks after President George W Bush declared landfall nationwide #Katrina victims had finally begun receiving official recognition four days later when then Secretary Of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced “the Gulf Coast region has been hardest hit...and has borne more than its fair share” therefore creating much public outcry both nationally and internationally resulting ultimately in presidential executive order number 12333 titled “Blocking Property Transactions With Persons Who Have Been Or Are Alleged To Have Been implicated In Thehurricane based On Confirmation That Such Person(s) Were involved Inor Connected To Terrorism” effective October 25th 2005 remaining effective until June 30th 2009 when then DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson announced that orders have been rescinded effective July 6th 2009 See: http://www2.gulfcoastchroniclearchive dot com/archives/2010/08/29/us-presidential-order-12333

Gretna's rich history is due to its location on the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Memphis. The town was originally located on the banks of the river where it crossed into Louisiana. By 1860, most of what is now Gretna had been built up around Commerce Street and Main Street. At that time, there were only a few stores and a few homes. In 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to move his army from Baton Rouge across the river to attack Petersburg, Virginia; this set off an extensive battle that lasted several days and resulted in over 60 Confederate casualties including many important generals such as Lee himself. As a result of this battle, parts of Gretna were burned down along with much of downtown Natchitoches Parish which lay upstream from today’s Gretna Bridge crossing the Mississippi River at what is now Interstate 10 near I-10 exit 207B/Gretna Boulevard south of downtown Natchitoches parish ( Map). However, some people in Gretana still remember all that happened during these trying times because they have preserved many pieces of local history such as historical newspapers dating back to 1849 which are currently housed at Natchitoches Parish Library . The Battle of Gettysburg also left an indelible mark on one corner of town when Union cavalry troopers galloped through it while attacking Confederate troops under General Pemberton leading to some high casualties among both sides ( Map). A couple years later in 1865 when Nashville experienced another devastating fire – this time resulting from exploding munitions stored inside a warehouse – most residents returned home but about 350 residents who had taken refuge behind walls along Commercial Street stayed until morning when Ulysses S Grant arrived with 1st Armored Division orders to burn everything rather than allow it to be looted or destroyed ( Map). This action helped start what would become known as “The Great Firestorm” which raged for five days leaving more than 100 buildings completely destroyed or damaged including churches, schools and businesses along with scores of homes . Overall damages reached $1 million dollars according to historian Don Freeman . Today business has revived somewhat in former industrial areas eastward towards Interstate 10 although much loss has occurred due largelyto Katrina damage particularly west side business districts adjacent Interstate 10 Exit 233 & Business Streets
Gretna was founded in 1868 by James A. Fenton, a lawyer and politician who served as the mayor of New Orleans from 1881 to 1887. Fenton's hometown is now part of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The town grew quickly because it was on the banks of the Mississippi River and its inhabitants were able to get rich selling goods exported from neighboring ports. In 1898, after Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of Haiti, Gretna became the first parish in Louisiana to recognize Haitian independence. The town continued to grow during the 20th century; however, it declined in population until the late 21st century due to suburbanization and other factors. Today Gretna is a small community with few residents remaining more than 70 years old.
