Gretna is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,759 at the 2010 census. The name of the town came from "Greene" which was a French name for an area that became part of what is now Gretna after it was ceded to Spain by France. The first settlers in Gretna were white traders and planters who arrived in 1810. By 1815, most of the men had died from yellow fever and other diseases brought over on the ships carrying settlers west to Texas. A few families continued to live here until about 1830 when all but a handful left for New Orleans because of economic reasons. In 1836, when New Orleans was sacked by General Andrew Jackson's forces, some people decided to return home and rebuild their homes near where they lived before the war. They named their new community "Gretna." A post office called "Gretna" was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. - In 1840, two brothers named John Crain settled here with their families after fleeing Indian raids near Kenedyville along the Red River - In 1850s several stores were built including one operated by Wm Hogg (1820-93) which still stands today By 1865 there were only 350 people living here; many went back East during Reconstruction due to poverty and political instability back then - After Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29th 2005 most buildings sustained significant damage or total destruction including much of downtown Gretna Today there are around 100 residents living downtown as well as some smaller businesses
