In 1912, James Fenton Hudspeth donated land on which a city park now stands; this park has since been renamedHurricane Katrina Memorial Park in honor of all those who lost their lives during Hurricane Katrina on August 29th 2005 The economy of Gretna relies heavily upon agriculture although there are some businesses that have recently started up such as a grocery store and gas station that are doing quite well with customers coming from neighboring towns . The name "Gretna" comes from the French word " Greta," meaning "hill." The first permanent European settlement in what is now Gretna was by the Ambrosian Brothers in 1718. Captain Pierre Dumas and his company of men were travel companions of General Louis de Montresor and became known as les amis du Commandant d'Ambrosia. In 1772, Captain Samuel de Champlain founded a post on the east bank of the Mississippi River named for himself, Champlain's Pointe (Gretsa). In 1802, when Lafayette moved his army across the river to fight against Spanish forces on Iberia Prairie at Chalmette Plantation near Baton Rouge, he ordered Colonel James Wilkinson to take command of Ambrusiana's brigade under him and march downriver to establish a new base camp for Wilkinson's brigade at Gretsa Pointe on Lake Pontchartrain. Here Wilkinson built his famous Headquarters House/Fortress which still stands today within Park Avenue Historic District boundaries. In 1810 Lieutenant Colonel Robert Hennepin organized an expedition against Thibodaux pirate raiders along Lafourche Bayou under cover of darkness on October 8th which resulted in only one man being killed and three wounded before they retreated back up bayou with their booty including women and children who had been taken captive by pirates during their attempt to pillage downstream villages along Lafourche Bayou. This episode was chronicled in a poem written By Major John Jacob Astor entitled "The Night Raid Against Thibodaux". In 1816 General Count Foch made an unsuccessful attempt to cross Lafourche Bayou withoutNotice using two steamboats that had been specially constructed for this purpose but due to high winds & tidal changes were forced back upstream until they arrived safely at Port Hudson where they disembarked their boats late afternoon November 15th after enduring more than 4 hours crossing difficult ebony waves & rapids without success despite having landed beneath high bluffs protected byLive Oak trees 150 feet tall! In 1827 Congress passed act entitled An Act To encourage Agriculture among all Classes of People Authorized To do so by Moses Masons Lodge No 2 Daughters No 3 [now Alexandria Masonic Temple], Alexandria LA 90002 Application Number: 8-2-107 A bill authorizing building of Fort St John near Grand Isle was introduced into Congress on February 11th also known as Bill Cushing On March 1st another bill authorizes construction of a blockhouse called Fort St Johns Atwater offshore from Houma LA 97301 authorized 100 acres surrounding it Heading towards MobileBay Blanchette Road approximately 10 miles long With walls about 6 feet thick finished early summer 1829 $50000 On July 5th 1830 Hurricane Andrew struck landfall just offshore from Gadsden Island between Gulf Shores Apts & Pensacola Beach FLINT HEAD ROYAL Yacht Club Head Quarters When it beganto form knew it was big trouble Early morning August 16th 1830 wind estimated around 75 mph hit levees creating flooding fears 300 people lost homes along with crops & livestock destroyed barns pup tents set up shop closed schools Belle Chasse state hospital open only for Women patients hurricane damage amounted to over $1 million
