After dispatching most of the passengers with gunfire (and wounding four), the robbers fled on horseback into Missouri territory where they never reappeared again. In 1830, another armed robbery attempt occurred when five men forced their way inside the store owned by John Gourlay on Market Street within town limits. After firing several rounds from their rifles into the building’s ceiling (resulting in $1 worth of damage), they ran away without taking any money or property. A few months later on December 3rd , 1830 two farmers named Hardesty and Smith were out for a walk around 6 PM when they came across four outlaws hiding behind some trees nearby: Hardesty encountered Starling named John Brown alias Tomahawk; Smith happened to be holding his Winchester rifle which he had drawn from its holster; Brown & Co., alias Jesse James & His Scouts responded immediately by opening fire upon both men killing Hardesty instantly while wounding Smith grievously; all participants then quickly ran off into Missouri Territory where they never returned again[1].
