Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Gretna comes from the French word "grétanie" meaning "a place where there are willows." The community was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1810. In 1830, Captain John Auld and his family arrived in Gretna after traveling through Mobile Bay on their Wayfaring Commission. They built a cabin andished shop on what is now Old Highway 9 near present day State Road 64. The first post office in Gretna was established in 1831. By 1840, there were nine churches and forty-eight residents. The population had dwindled to just five hundred by 1849 when a new courthouse and jail were built on Main Street between Third Street and Fourth Street. On November 14, 1850, the first election under state law was held in Gretna with twenty-four candidates running for three positions: sheriff (Jimmie Hinton), registrar of deeds (John Morrow), assessor (Garland Davenport) and justice of peace (Simeon Biddle). Reverend John McLaughlin officiated at the poll site across frompresentday Church of God United Brethren before voting himself an elector because he could not attend due to illness that week. In 1860, Confederate forces burned down two homes in Gretna during their raid on neighboring Alexandria parish as part of Operation Crossroads. A few years later General Robert Ewell's army passed through Rapides Parish en route to Uniontown during its campaign against Vicksburg south of New Orleans; evidence suggests most or all of the homes destroyed here were owned by Confederate soldiers garrisoned hereabouts at this time. One such home still stands extant within blocks of today's school building which served as Uniontown's onlyablished Female Prison up until 1862 when it became known as West Point prison camp for women operated by nearby Lake Pontchartrain...Thereafter paroled women inhabitants continued livingin various former Uniontown buildings until Reconstruction began... Gretna, Louisiana is a city in and the county seat of Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. The population was 17,821 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Lafourche Parish by population size and second-largest city in Louisiana after New Orleans. The first Europeans to visit Gretna were French traders who landed there in 1699 on their exploration of the area for new land to explore suitable for sugarcane plantations. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1718 when Captain John D'Urville explored what is now Gretna Bayou from a small boat during his trip down the Mississippi River. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson led an expedition into Lafourche Parish and discovered oil reserves near present-day Gretna. The discovery led to a rapid influx of settlers into Gretna, which grew rapidly until it reached its peak during Reconstruction Era late 19th century when cotton production became dominant economy. In 1865, following reconstruction, most African Americans were removed from Gulf Coast plantations and relocated to east Baton Rouge County where they worked on white families' farms until 1937 when they were again allowed back onto plantation lands with some exceptions through desegregation policies enacted under then Governor Earl Warren's executive order "All White schools must open by 1970". However these policies did not last long as many black families returned to farming following World War II before integration resumed throughout much of Lafourche Parish although some small pockets remain segregated today. The city experienced significant growth following Hurricane Katrina which caused extensive damage and loss of life both within town limits as well as beyond due to flooding that followed across Mississippi River valley including Gretna Bayou which went up faster than usual due to high winds speeds along with lack of debris removal capabilities by local authorities complicated emergency response efforts particularly given time pressures stemming from rescue mission aftermaths such as urban sprawl created adjacent communities especially around Biloxi/New Orleans metropolitan area having makeshift levees failed or been overwhelmed overwhelmed resulting in more people homeless displaced total reaching over 100,000 with majority living in predominantly low income housing districts often characterized as "slums" areas lacking basic services such as sewerage and electricity access despite mayor proclaiming "Gretna isn't about tents; it's about hope" . In January 2017 Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced plans for a $10 million redevelopment project called "New Beginnings" spearheaded by developer Edwards Development Company LLC located on Route 2 just east of downtown Gretna billed as one of several responses toKatrina recovery effort including IDC's original proposal for 240 affordable housing units within 5 blocks radius along channelside streets adjoining riverfront parkland with public transportation connections thereto comprising key component including bike share program serving entire district
