Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the eastern corner of the state of Louisiana. The population was 1,611 at the 2000 census. The name comes from an early French settlement called "Rétichon," which means "hillock" and refers to the rise of Mount Raynald on which the town sits. In 1851, Captain John Denny founded a post office here and named it after his friend General John C. Frémont. In 1865, Captain Samuel Pritchard built Fort Pritchard on what is now State Route 7 near present-day Gretna. It served as a military outpost for several years and was used as a base for treasure hunting operations by early settler families such as the Dennys and Smiths. At its peak around 1870, Fort Pritchard housed up to fifty soldiers and contained artillery batteries that could fire down onto Mobile Bay. In 1881, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston's army invaded neighboring Jefferson Parish during their campaign against Ulysses S Grant's Union army in the American Civil War. Aftermath of this battle left more than 160 dead on both sides with over two thousand wounded or missing. As part of Johnston's effort to consolidate all Confederate forces in east Louisiana following this victory, he ordered his general officer corps to move westward across Interstate 10 towards Baton Rouge so that they might join up with other Confederate units under Robert E Lee in Texas This order led to significant shortages of food and ammunition due to long distances traveled and lack of infrastructure at the time; one result was outbreaks of disease such as yellow fever among troops marching northward across open country unfamiliar with local conditions The Confederacy eventually surrendered unconditionally on April 9th 1865 at Appomattox Court House in Virginia; after three years of fighting against overwhelming odds Fort Pritchard was commandeered by Union Forces until it was abandoned in 1868 when most Confederate troops were evacuated back home By 1900, only traces remainedof Fort Pritchard including some foundations still standing today
