Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Gretna has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and is one of the few remaining French Canadian settlements in Louisiana. The first European to visit Gretna was Jean Lafitte on July 14, 1682. The early settlers were mostly Canadiens from Quebec who brought their livestock and crops with them to what is now Jefferson Parish. In 1803, General James Kenedy organized a military expedition against the Red River Rebellion led by Major General David Dennison and Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson. After routing the rebels at La Salle Bridge, Kenedy decided to move his army into central Louisiana permanently and named this new outpost after his old friend, Governor Lachute of Canada's Province of Quebec City (now Montreal). In 1807, Lachute recommended that Captain Pierre-Joseph Proudhon establish a civilian government in Gretna as part of an effort to prevent further uprisings among the Indian tribes in southcentral Louisiana. Unfortunately for Proudhon, members of his own militia refused to disarm until they received assurances from Lachute that any hostilities would be ended peacefully. In 1812-13, General Andrew Jackson invaded southernLouisiana during the American Civil War on behalf of President Abraham Lincoln. On November 8th 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union artillery batteries near Gaston Station Road outside Gretna while Jackson was attending a civil defense meeting nearby at Pineville Methodist Church. At least 20 Union soldiers were killed and 50 wounded before retreating back into Missouri under cover of darkness; this event became known as Battle Hogue or Battle For Chickamauga because it took place within easy reach of Chattanooga National Military Park today. Two weeks later General Stonewall Jackson destroyed Confederate batteries at Missionary Ridge outside La Grange without taking casualties; this event became known as Battle Of Gaines Mill because it occurred within striking distance of Memphis National Cemetery today but still remains undecribed today due to its remote location inside Tennessee ( approximately 45 miles southeast of Nashville ). On November 4th 1865 local residents voted 9-2 in favor of secession from America following Confederate victory at Vicksburg which had opened up Mississippi Territory to slavery; however only about 10%of Bretons actually left for dead or fled when Fort Sumter surrendered on April 12th 1861 due largely to lack food and ammunition Pemberton had stockpiled along the river banks inland from Baton Rouge waiting for just such an opportunity Following World War I local businesses struggled through Prohibition while citizens continued working throughout wartime shortages resulting in many farmers becoming millionaires overnight thanks largely to oil production Developments began around World War II including what are now known as Interstate 10/I-10A which linked Baton Rouge with Houston via exit 198 off I-10W leading directly into Gulfport Naval Air Station providing access for airfields used by both sides during combat However despite these successes much progress was not made towards developing an urban center like downtown Baton Rouge which gradually emerged over time With more people moving into larger cities prices started spiraling outpaced development creating problems such as large areas being left unloved while smaller neighborhoods languished without any hope for change Fishing communities grew rapidly around Pointe Coupee Lake offerding potential jobs but also risking pollution caused by extendedboat loading operations As Katrina hit hardest racism quickly surfaced with African Americans being refused service on buses leaving them stranded virtually alone on St Claude Island Many refugees chose suicide rather than live through another year living amidst poverty and discrimination Although some aspects have since improved most locals continue facing unique challenges such as high unemployment rates Despite all these struggles some community members remain determined each day long battle against adversity
