Gretna, Louisiana was founded on December 10, 1803 by Captain John P. Magruder and his three companions as a post on the Mississippi River. The town's first settler was Samuel Tinsley. On October 15, 1845, General Andrew Jackson issued the order to burn Gretna for being a "Communist stronghold." The order resulted in the entire town being destroyed and over 1,000 people escaping into the surrounding woods. The town's only building remaining from before the fire is a small chapel that still stands today.
