Gretna is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Gretna were a group of Creole people who migrated from what is now St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana to this area in 1763. They built theirown parish seat on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi River and named it for their old home, Gretna on the Gourd River. In 1801, a company of American Revolutionary War veterans founded by General Lafayette arrived here and established a military post which they called "Gretna." The first white settler was John Pritchard who arrived in 1802. At that time there were only Native Americans living within immediate range of Gretna as well as some French Canadian colonists and slaves engaged in cattle drives along the riverbank between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. In 1804, when Jackson became president of the United States, he issued an order authorizing construction of a steamboat propeller plant at Port Hudson on Lake Pontchartrain; this led to increased shipping traffic through Gretna's harbor and increased development around town which beganPhase One including: building stores, residences, churches and schools; Phase Two included introducing sugarcane production to replace rice as our primary food source; Phase Three included expanding manufacturing operations with introduction of refrigeration (in 1902) In 1916-1917 movie star Cecil B DeMille filmed his classic film "Citizen Kane" here while portions of Kane's dilapidated hotel still stand today across from Capitol Hill Park off US Highway 85B (now Veterans Memorial Boulevard). There are several interesting stories associated with these lights such as one where developer George Hargrave wanted them turned off during Carnival because he did not want revelers raining candy down on him but got permission from city officials instead A more recent story has been told about how one particular light actually stayed lit despite numerous complaints from neighbors about its propensity to send out epileptic seizures due to its high voltage generated by its own electric motor
