Smith & Wesson Company. Gretna was founded on December 12, 1810 by Captain John Pemberton and his wife Jemima Lewis as a trading post on the Red River. The post served as the capital of Orleans Parish from 1819 to 1837 before being moved to New Orleans. The first settler in Gretna likely came from Virginia in 1785 and named it after her home country - Great Britain's former colony in North America. By 1800 there were around 20 families living in what is now Gretna. In 1810, Captain John Pemberton established a trading post at what is now Gretna with fellow American captain William Hull as his partner - this became known as PemberTON'S FALLS (later JEFFERSON PARISH). Over time other traders such as David Dixon arrived and built stores and homes near present day Gretna offering fishing, lumbering and other products from their properties for sale or trade to pioneers who journeyed westward during this era including Andrew Jackson who called it "the most beautiful spot I ever saw" when he visited in 1825 while serving as President of the United States In 1840+, Gov't land grants were made available for settlement within 2 miles (3 km) of any river mouth including that of the Red River which led to many early settlers coming through Gretta on their way northwards; these included General James Wilkinson & family who settled in what is now Alexandria then moving upstream where they began operating a ferry service between Alexandria and Gretta becoming one of first businesses incorporated within Jefferson Parish The community grew slowly but steadily through various natural disasters such as floods in 1928 that destroyed much property; however, by 1929/30 all but two buildings had been rebuilt with only 1 storey remaining original due to damage sustained during Hurricane Royal which struck Beaufort County late that year . In 1930 an additional building was added along US 90/92 providing services such as grocery store etc dating back to 1903 when Mrs. Lillian Sweet started selling eggs door-to-door residents would bring them fresh eggs daily As Gretna prospered new businesses cropped up like beauty parlors social clubs fire departments cemeteries churches schools etc.. However until recently all services were provided by volunteer firefighters who meet monthly at Calvary Baptist Church

Gretna is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 12,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gretna was founded by French colonists in 1765 and laid out as a town on November 3, 1803 by General James Wilkinson. The town name comes from the French word for "green" or "plain." The first post office in Gretna was established on December 10, 1814 by Captain John Fenton. In 1860, Josephine Maynard built a home here that became known as the Mother House of Gretna. The first hospital in what is now Gretna opened its doors to patients on October 1, 1865. By 1870, there were over 40 businesses and several churches in downtown Gretna with an estimated population of 2,500 people. When two hurricanes struck New Orleans during 1900 and 1905 respectively - Hurricane Betsy and Hurricane Frank - much damage occurred to both cities but little impact on Gretna due to its location inland within Jefferson Parish. However following Katrina's landfall on August 29th 2005 many stores and businesses lost power while many homes were destroyed; this led to an increase in business activity in downtown Gretna which saw an influx of refugees who had fled New Orleans prior to Katrina. Since 2007 Mayor Mitch Landrieu has pushed for development around the Saint Bernard Shores retail center located across Interstate 10 from downtown Gretana which would include more than 100 new homes and jobs overlooking Lake Pontchartrain; however this proposal has been met with resistance from some residents who feel it would only benefit wealthier residents while disadvantaging poorer ones adjacent to the waterfront area where most of Gentra's job growth would occur
