As a result of this order, only about 60% of the original settlers returned to Gretna after the war. In 1893, J.C. Henson built what is now known as Henson's Store on Market Street in Gretna for his business partner J.C.'s brothers Emmett and Norman Henson. In 1897, Fenton Patterson opened his dry goods store on Elm Street in Gretna which became one of the most popular stores in town until it closed in 1984 when it was replaced by Walmart Supercenter. school buses stop at Main and Market Streets near Henson's Store from 1954 until 1978 when they were replaced by Taxicab service which continued until 2006 when it was discontinued due to budget cuts that impacted other services such as transportation for schools and businesses within the community such as grocery stores and pharmacies

Gretna was founded by the Houma people in 1765. The town was called Attalaca until 1837, when it changed its name to Gretna after General Andrew Jackson's victory in the Battle of New Orleans. The city was named for General Lafayette, who visited the area in 1785. The first post office at Gretna was established on January 1, 1836. By 1840, there were 12 stores and a population of 350 residents. In 1861, the state legislature designated the city as the seat of government for Jefferson Parish. On July 16, 1870, a tornado caused widespread damage and killed 28 people in Gretna and surrounding areas. The tornado is considered to be one of Louisiana's most deadly natural disasters. In 1895, an addition to the original 9-block block downtown streetscape was completed that included two blocks of new buildings which became known as "the Colonies." These buildings served as home to many businesses including banks and hotels until they were destroyed by fire in 1933. The post office moved from its original location on Canal Street in 1907 to what is now Market Square before moving again in 1916 to its current location on West Bank Drive following World War I shortages of postal service resources across America due to戦争 situations overseas. In 1941 local officials decided against maintaining a Post Office (General Store) due to lack of business; however it reopened 3 years later with general store operations continuing until 1984 when it closed completely due to budget cuts within local governments throughout Louisiana during this time period known as "The Great Recession". Gretna is located in the parish of St. Bernard, Louisiana and is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 97. As of the 2010 census, there were 98 people living in Gretna CDP. The CDP was created by an act of the Louisiana Legislature on November 3, 1998, from a section of the parish of Canisteo that had been annexed to Gretna Parish.
