In 1810, a group of Frenchmen led by Pierre Laclau founded a small town called Metairie on the north bank of the Mississippi River. After American forces invaded and sacked Metairie in 1812, its French citizens decided to move their settlement to Gretna instead. In 1816, General Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel James Wilkinson as commander of all United States troops stationed in Louisiana. Wilkinson quickly built a fort at Gretna and began construction on what would become Fort Jackson. He also established a small town called New Orleans near present-day Baton Rouge to provide supplies for his military base. In 1830, General Claude Laffayette ordered Colonel Wilkinson to evacuate Fort Jackson and return home because he saw an opportunity to improve Louisiana's defences against Indian attacks. Wilkinson refused and remained at Fort Jackson until 1840 when he was replaced by Major General John Pemberton as commander of US forces in Louisiana. The town was founded by French colonists in 1814 and named for General James Fannin. In 1836, it became a United States territory and was renamed for Confederate general Robert E. Lee. The post office opened in 1836 and remained open until it closed on December 5, 1940. Gretna has two high schools: Gretna High School and Roman Catholic Central High School. There are also two public junior colleges: Roman Catholic technical school and Loyola University New Orleans Jesuits College of Business & Economics. The local paper is the "Gretna Daily News". The library is the "Libraries of Gretna".

Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The population was 8,884 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by Frenchmen named Duchêne and Moreau. The name comes from the river on which it sits and from the word "gret" meaning "hope." The first store in Gretna opened its doors on November 12th, 1836. The store was run by Pierre-Félix Moreau and his son Jean-Baptiste Moreau Sr. At that time, there were only a few stores open in this part of Louisiana. By 1840, there were twenty-eight stores operating in Gretna. In 1853, George Washington Carver arrived in Gretna with his family to start a grocery business. In 1886, the state legislature passed a bill providing for an education station at Gretna to be established as part of the State Normal School System. The school operated until 1912 when it closed due to financial difficulties. A new school opened its doors in 1914 and continued operation until 1923 when it burned down; however, it reopened under new ownership two years later and continued operations until 1974 when it merged into East Baton Rouge Parish Schools District No. 2). In 1951, Governor John F Kennedy visited Gretna during his campaign for president and declared October 10th as "John F Kennedy Day" in honor of this important figure in our history! On that day over seventy people attended a parade through town celebrating Mr. Kennedy's accomplishments as President of the United States! It wasn't just local residents who got involved with politics during those days - many businesses also contributed their time or money to help out with Kennedy's campaigns! In fact, most businesses closed up shop on October 10th so they could participate fully within district #2! Today much of what once characterized downtown Gretna has been replaced by highriseresidential buildingsites such as Embassy House (formerly known as Lady Bird Johnson Presidential Mansion), LSU Health Sciences Center (formerly known as University Place Hospital), Renaissance Tower (former home of newspapers Enterprise Publications Inc., now known as Sun Life Financial) - all built since around 2000 or so; Lafayette Square Park; andGovernment Plaza Complex - all built since around 1970 or so...all while still retaining some vestige of its historical landmarks like Baptist Church which is still used for services today...merely another example highlighting how culture & demographics have changed so rapidly throughout Central Louisiana over these past several decades!!!
Gretna, Louisiana was founded in 1836 by the brothers Isaac and Jacob Petit. The city derived its name from a small town in southwestern France called Gretna, which was the original home of the Petits. The brothers started a cotton plantation in what is now Gretna, and soon began to sell their products throughout northeast Louisiana. In 1847, they built a brick courthouse and jail in downtown Gretna. They also constructed two churches – one for Protestants and one for Catholics – as well as several other buildings. By 1861, Gretna had more than 1,000 residents. In 1870, the Petits sold their business to John Kirby of New Orleans. Kirby renamed it Kirby Cotton planting company and developed it into an international firm that made cotton plantations all over America.
