The name Gretna means "place of many trees." In 1812, Pierre Dorion founded a post office here and named it after his home country of Quebec. After France's defeat in the American Revolution, Washington decided to restore French rule over parts of Louisiana so that all Native Americans living there would be forced onto reservations or into slavery. In 1796, when the Treaty of New Orleans ended the French and Indian War, Gretna became part of Orleans Parish. On January 3rd 1801, President James K. Polk signed the Organic Act which created Lafayette Parish from part of Jefferson Parish consisting mostly of rural areas east and west of I-10. The first settler in Gretna was David Walker who arrived in 1800 from Kentucky with his family. He set up a small farm near what is now downtown Gretna and built a log cabin called "Walker's Grove". He died about two years later while caring for his farm animals during a severe storm that smashed through nearby townships killing many people and causing widespread destruction. His wife Jeannette moved to Gretna with their four children around 1802 and started an early grocery store which operated until 1870 when it was acquired by Jno Crain Associates which later became known as Lumberton Brothers Company (LBC). The company made extensive contributions to local civic life including donating land for city hall, building schools and churches (including one designed by Gilded Age architect Isidor Rankin), creating a new street grid based on European models and building several homes used by government officials during Reconstruction period . Many members of LBC's family went on to become major landowners in Gretna including their father Daniel Crain who served as mayor from 1904-1908; brother George Waddell Crain who served as lieutenant governor from 1930-1934; son John Avant Waddell Crain who served as state senator from 1961-1969; grandson John Avant Waddell Jr., also state senator since 1969; daughter Susan Ewing Price Snider; stepmother Hilda Hyatt Price Snider; sisters Mildred Dykes Price Snider (Mildred Dykes) and Alma Dixon Price Snider (Alma Dixon). In 1865 General Edwin Vail discovered oil near Clearwater Bayou on behalf of Gulf Oil Corporation but Stephen Fenton pulled out before production could commence because he did not believe that oil could be mined commercially at this depth despite assurances given by Vail representatives about its potential worth billions dollars per barrel payable over ten years if properly developed - making him one of history's most celebrated entrepreneurs ever! One legacy aspect perpetuated by Fenton was developing Clearwater Bayou into one today’s key thoroughfare serving both retail shoppers shopping along Houston Street as well as industrial users such as Shell Oil Company Facilities #1 & 2 on Bayou Longueuil wharf while also providing access to wetlands adjacent to our city limits stretching southward nearly nine miles! On October 30th 1907 Hurricane2 approved plans submitted by Mayor Leroy Stokes for reconstruction activities within City Limits following damage sustained during November 5th hurricane described hereinabove caused primarily within City Limits itself with some impact extending outwardly exceeding 1/4 mile observed directly across satellite map boundaries associated with other damaged communities situated immediately adjacent thereto viz Clearwater Beach Resort CasinoClearwater Bayou MarinaReservoir opened approx 1923 / Agency closed 1959
Gretna, Louisiana was founded in 1814 by the French. It became a U.S. town in 1836 and seat of government in 1840. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s as sugar plantations were established here and manufacturing began to take off, making Gretna one of the most prosperous cities in Louisiana.
