In 1892, the first shot was fired at the Louisiana State Fair in Gretna. A band of men from nearby oil fields set off fireworks to celebrate the occasion. The first bullets were made of brass and lodshot, a type of lead shot that was used for hunting small game. The practice of hunting with ammunition began in Louisiana in the early 1800s. Prior to muzzleloading, shooting arrows with heavy buckshot would do the job adequately. Muzzleloaders got their start around 1830 when Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a way to use powder and ball instead of just feathers and hair to shoot arrows. With this new technology, people could now hunt large game such as deer or bear with relative impunity. By 1892, black powder had been replaced by white powder in most handguns and rifles across America. Ammunition manufacturers soon followed suit because it offered larger profits per unit sold than blackpowder did. Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population of Gretna was 5,846 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Gretna were French colonists who came to Louisiana in 1765. The town started as a trading post and later became a center for agriculture. In 1819, the Treaty of Paris ended the War of 1812 and ceded all of Canada to United States forces. As a result, Gretna became an important American military base during the Mexican-American War and Civil War. From 1861 to 1865, residents served in Confederate or Union Army units or militias under General John C. Frémont. In 1870, Henry Mouton developed what is now Gretna into a small city with its own government and schools. By 1901, however, Gretna's population had dwindled to fewer than 100 people and it lost its independence from Jefferson Parish until 1959 when it joined the new parish of Metairie. "Gretna" comes from two different words: "grette," meaning "a town," and "nan," meaning "new." The first word was derived from French Huguenot refugees who fled France during the Edict of Nantes (1598). They arrived in what is now Jefferson Parish on October 3rd, 1697; they named their settlement after François Grettin de Retz (1506-1599), one of President James Ketchum's commissioners on our territory claims before his Purchase by France in 1763.) After several years they abandoned their claim because they found no passthroughs available for transportation overland from Nouvelle-Orléans eastward." The second word came about because then Mayor Francois Lafitte wanted his name attached to something so he could get some money for improvements around town that would make it more attractive to buyers prospective innkeepers etc...He got tired constantly hearing people say 'Non sans Nan', which means without Nan there wouldn't be anything! So he thought up 'Gretnia' with added -nest' because 'grette' meant little nest or shop while 'nan' meant new development."
Gretna is located in the U.S. state of Louisiana and is the county seat of Jefferson Parish. The population was 21,640 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth most populous city in Louisiana after New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette.
