Gretna, Louisiana is a small town located in the Jefferson Parish area of Louisiana. In 1837, it was the site of an encampment of Native Americans called the "Pequot" tribe. The U.S. military burned down the village in 1849 in order to eliminate any evidence of Indian activity. Gretna was platted as a town in 1892 and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1976.

The first Europeans to explore and settle Gretna were Frenchmen who set up a trading post there in 1719. By 1800, the village had three stores and twelve homes. In 1806, Claude-Pierre Lafitte established his own trading post near present-day Gretna and soon became known as "the Cajun pirate." After Lafitte's death in 1814, his son Jacques took over his father's business operations in Gretna. Jacques Lafitte was arrested in 1821 for pirating goods from British ship HMS Beagle while he was on board ship; he received a sentence of life imprisonment with hard labor on the island of Mauritius (now Réunion). He later sold his interest in Gretna to John Pemberton for $5,000. In 1840, when Confederate General Braxton Bragg advanced upon New Orleans after its capture by Union forces during the American Civil War, he ordered General Joseph Effician to march through Gretna on his way to reinforce Confederate troops besieging Vicksburg amassing supplies for that city's defenders. On July 4th of that year (1840), about 25 people were killed when an accidental explosion occurred at an old cotton gin located near present-day Boulevard d'Alma Street and Magazine Street; this caused extensive damage to buildings within what is now downtown Gretna.

Gretna is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 25,740 at the 2000 census. It is the parish seat of Jefferson and most of the parish bounds are along the Mississippi River. The first Europeans to visit Gretna were French colonists who arrived in 1699. The name "Gretna" meaning "the place where trees grow" may have been selected because of its location on a bend in the river which enabled ships to disembark there easily. In 1759, Battle of Baton Rouge took place here when American troops attempted to invade Spanish territory. The Battle resulted in a British victory and led to increased American interest in Louisiana. In 1802, Napoleon Bonaparte's army invaded America and successfully conquered it, making Gretna an important militarypost within his empire. After the war ended, many Americans followed Bonaparte back into America while others stayed behind and founded what would become Gretna as a small town named for General James Wilkinson (1769-1845) who served as Commandant of Fort Polk during part of this time period - Wilkinsontown being one such community. During Reconstruction following Reconstructionist policies put into effect by President Abraham Lincoln following his Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, many African Americans migrated from their former slaveholding plantations throughout south Louisiana for work opportunities in what is now known as "The Great Migration". Many black men from Gretna went on to make significant contributions both politically and economically during this time period - including Drayton McLynn (1868-1940), Pee Wee Crayton (1893-1965), George Wallace (1930-2008), Edwin Jackson (1966-present) - all three serving as Ulysses S Grant's Governors of Arkansas and Tennessee respectively between 1901 and 1909 before becoming Vice Presidential candidates under LBJ on that year's Nixon landslide campaign platform.

Gretna was founded in 1829 and became a town in 1832. It was the site of a Union battle on July 9, 1863, which helped Lincoln win the Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg took place nearby in April 1865 and resulted in over 1,500 dead.
