Eunice is a small town in the parish of West Feliciana, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,994 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1836 by American women who emigrated from New England and Canada. Eunice is named for General James Eunice, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as governor of Louisiana. Eunice's history begins with two families: the Meeks and the Pritchetts. In 1836, General James Eunice, an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War and future governor of Louisiana, settled in what is now Eunice with his family. He had been sent to survey land grants in southwest Louisiana following his victory over Confederate forces at Mansfield Park on October 22nd, 1835. When he arrived in what is now Eunice he found that only a small number of settlers had arrived since it was believed that there would be no major hostilities due to Spanish neutrality during the warring states period; however this was not to be case as Mexico began warring against America on April 16th 1861 after Ulysses S Grant’s Expedition crossed into Mexican territory unannounced while under cover of night while raiding Veracruz provincial archives- this event starting a civil war between America’s northern and southern Hemispheres that has continued to this day (see also “TheMexicanWarOf1846”). In less than one year from its founding, Eunice had become known for its beautiful white cotton plantations which were home to enslaved African Americans who worked off their passage money or provided labor onlier for their owners/managers; these plantations were also used as stores and homes for local residents until they were sold or given away by their owners during Reconstruction era following the end of Reconstruction in 1865 when former Confederate soldiers returned home mainly due to amnesty offered by President Andrew Johnson – although some werestill able to maintain links through marriage alliances with free black women living near them (e.g., Mrs. John Witherspoon located just east of Eureka Plantation which she purchased from her master shortly before emancipation)). Eunice is a town in the parish of Iberville in Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie, LA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Eunice was founded in 1836 by General John C. Frémont and his wife, Émilie-Lydia Pemberton Frémont, as a community on the east bank of the Arkansas River near present day Lafayette. The name Eunice comes from anaksi meaning "to leave" or "to go away." The first post office opened in 1837 and named for General John C. Frémont's wife, Émilie-Lydia Pemberton Frémont; it closed in 1865 because of Mexican American War efforts to control access to mail during that time period. In 1840, several families moved to what is today Eunice from White Sulphur Springs (now Fort Polk), Louisiana due to flooding caused by Hurricane Andrew which passed through that area earlier that year. In 1892, General Pershing ordered Ulysses S. Grant's forces into east Louisiana after their victory at Vicksburg and this event is known as the Battle of 3 Rivers Bridge where Grant's army destroyed Confederate cavalry units under Confederate Brigadier General James Longstreet during the Battle of 3 Rivers Bridge on July 4th1892 near Vidalia Parish (now Baton Rouge). It was also here that Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Lecomte led Confederate troops along Prairie du Chien Road against Union forces commanded by MajorGeneral George Crook) during Operations Crossroads and Little Big Horn on November 25th 1896 while both armies were converging towards Helena/Pierreville Plains northeast of Stroudsburg Texas; these operations resulted in up to 140 fatalities among Union Soldiers with over 500 killed or wounded by Confederates./ A blacksmith shop built on Church Street became known as “The Blacksmith Shop” following its closure by Federal authorities following events leading up to World War II when Japanese American citizens were interned there during World War II.. Eunice experienced major floods beginning around 1900 due largely to heavy rains brought about by hurricanes Hugo and Katrina followed shortly thereafter by Rita which caused extensive damage throughout eastern Louisiana including much lost residential property especially along Mississippi Avenue due later dubbed “Rita's Drainage Path” particularly targeting low lying areas prone to flooding.. After years of planning spearheaded by then Mayor Mitch Landrieu and then Governor Kathleen Blanco a new city hall Annex was completed downtown in 2006 overlooking Lake Pontchartrain with plans for retail development surrounding it as well as public transportation options such as light rail Transit now serving downtown via two stations located adjacent each other just south of Canal Street off Jackson Square mall providing easy access across town for residents however all growth has stalled potential redevelopment has occurred within walking distance only limited commercial development has taken place since then making this one of most abandoned cities in New Orleans metropolitan area with large vacant lots available for purchase easily Eunice is located at 30°45′25″N 91°14′15″W about 12 miles west-northwest from Downtown New Orleans
