In 1811, Eunice was founded by French colonists as "Upland", meaning "upstream." In 1835, it was renamed to its current name after General Lafayette, who had helped lead France's liberation from Napoleon's rule in 1795. In 1830, when oil was discovered in Texas and Louisiana began to reap the benefits of the new technology, native farmers in these areas began moving into Eunice to set up businesses transporting goods and services across the river aboard steamboats or wagons. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Eunice; some still proprietorships today! A cotton gin and distillery were built around 1870 by Jens Jacobsen; this made Eunice an important center for cotton production until World War II when synthetic fiber became more popular. In 1915-16 local resident Hilda Ladd developed a process for making soft soap which quickly gained international attention and led her company to become one of America’s leading producers of soaps until the early 1990s when consolidation took hold with multiple firms taking share from Ladd’s original two partners (originally Epi Soap Co., Inc.,now Unilever). This forced her company into bankruptcy some time later but she has since been reborn as LaLaurier Soap Co., Ltd.; located on I-10 bridge crossing into Monroe County near Baton Rouge! Today much like days gone by before technology advanced supermarkets replaced small mom & pop stores that overflowed onto streets cornering highways etc; people here rely heavily on ecommerce (& internet) retailers (& big box stores) for most items they purchase especially groceries/cereal/meat products etc...it all starts with shopping online thru Amazon then sometimes Walmart if you have access to those locations (or go through a special deal)...Eileen may be old school but she knows how to shop!!!
