This effort failed because Ameritrade did not want any part of what could be seen as reopening old wounds after so many years of prohibitionism (the only legal rail transportation option available at that time). This failure is significant because it shows that while Americrailroads may have been profitable through World War II (although not really until after 1945), they never regained their former glory; this is due primarily to US government prohibitionism at that time rather than anything else. They had two children: James Conte who marries Elizabeth Bourgeois eulogy delivered by Bishop Adolph Jansen officiating November 12th 1865 read "In memory" before burial in family plot adjacent to First Baptist Church lot now known as Cemetery Extension Street."

The name "Eunice" comes from the Choctaw word meaning "happy." The first settlers in what is now Eunice were French colonists who arrived in 1718. They named their community after Marie-Joseph de la Salle, Sieur de La Nouvelle France (1701-1768). In 1803, the United States acquired Louisiana from Spain and renamed it for General James K. Polk (1804-1865), president of the United States from 1849 to 1853 and again from 1865 to his death in 1865. General Polk had been born in Eunice and died there on July 8, 1885. Eunice was founded by French colonists on April 10, 1736 as Pascagoula Vieille Cité (Old Pascagoula City). The original residents were Frenchmen who fled British rule during the Seven Years' War (1689-1697). A post office called Pascagoula Vieille Cité was established in 1737 and operated until 1800. The name has been used intermittently since then to refer to various communities throughout Rapides Parish including Eunice which became its official name in 1803 when it became part of Rapides Parish. In 1800, a sawmill was built adjacent to what is now Main Street near US 64/US 60 south of Pascagoula Vieille Cité; this mill continued operation until about 1840. At that time, local farmers began growing cotton and other crops along with Mechanic's Square being developed as an early market place for surrounding villages including Pascagoula Vieille Cité where merchants bought goods brought into town by travelers and sold them locally or exported goods back home via the port of New Orleans
