Eunice is a small town in Louisiana, located about 20 miles east of Baton Rouge. The population was 10,000 at the time of the 2010 census. It is one of the poorest areas in Louisiana and has a history of crime. In 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee fought his way through Union forces to reach Lafayette, Louisiana. He took up residence there and began planning his next move-the invasion of Mexico. On July 12th, 1862 he sent an order to all Confederate forces: "If you find any Federal troops or citizens within five miles of here on either side of the Lafitte River (sic), shoot them dead." On September 2nd, 1862 Major John Witherspoon's unit encountered Union cavalry units near Eunice. In a bloody engagement that lasted three hours, Witherspoon's unit killed over 50 Union troopers while sustaining only two casualties themselves. In addition to this victory, Witherspoon received much credit for saving Lafayette from destruction by Union forces during this particular campaign. One week later on October 6th 1862 General Rebel LtGen James Longstreet ordered his cavalry division under Maj Gen Pemberton to cross the Lafitte River and attack Union positions around Eunice from the rear - what became known as Operation Crossroads . During these engagements around Eunice Confederate losses numbered more than 200 men killed or wounded with no loss suffered by their enemy counterparts. Eunice, LA is a small town in the parish of St. Martin in the Bayou District of Louisiana. The population was 2,477 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Route 45 north-northwest of Baton Rouge and south-southwest of New Orleans. Eunice is named after General James Wilkinson who fought in the American Civil War and is also known as "the Junction". The post office opened in 1881, and closed because it was moved to New Orleans in 1906. The first store was a general Store run by Aisha Washington which still stands today next to the BP well site just west of U.S. Highway 90 (now I-10). There are several churches including Eucharist Catholic Church, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church, Methodist Episcopal Zion Church - all open for worship services on weekdays from 9am to 5pm with an occasional prayer service held at 11am or 1pm if there is weather permitting The area around present day Eunice had been settled by Native Americans dating back millions of years before European explorers discovered it during their exploration and mapping efforts during the early 1800s. French traders were the first Europeans to explore this area when they set out from colony at Mobile Bayou on July 4th 1795 looking for land that would provide food for their troops fighting against Great Britain in their war with France In 1806 British Captain John Ligonier explored what later became Louisiana while exploring for new routes through America He reported finding large amounts of oil but no natural gas found until his trip downriver to Bessemer City where he drilled two wells on August 3rd 1817 . After these explorations additional land claims were made throughout much of what would become North Louisiana On October 12th 1818 , General James Wilkinson arrived at Mobile Bayou with 6 companies armed with cannons and 600 men under his command after crossing overland from West Tennessee via East Tennessee This event marked beginning of what would be called "the American Civil War" as both sides claimed all or part of this territory In November 1861 General Albert Sidney Johnston ordered Major General Nathaniel Banks to move forces into East Louisiana under orders to capture Jefferson Davis who had fled northeastward along the Mississippi River To do so Johnston ordered two battalions apiece from each division commanded by Generals Pemberton (in Harrison County) & Beauregard (in Lafourche Parish) But due to heavy rains Confederate General Robert Ewell's army marched into eastern Arkansas instead Raghib Butt brigade detached from Beauregard's divisionMarching upriver towards Lafayette May 10 1862 While en route one battalion stopped near present day Lafayette about a mile upstream from where USHighway 90 intersects Bridgeport Road some miles east northwest Ofpresent day Eunice bridge Over current river

The town was founded in 1881 as a post office called Haughtonville and then renamed Eunice after General Butler's wife, Eugenie. In 1907 the post office moved to its present location and continued to be called Eunice until it merged with nearby Westlake in 1966. According to the 2010 census, the population of Eunice has grown by 8% since 2000. The percentage growth rate is most impressive when taking into account that the overall population of Lamar County has only increased by 3%. This increase can be partially attributed to an increase in tourism which has helped drive local economic development. Additionally, there are many new businesses opening up throughout the year that have contributed to this growth. One of the most significant factors behind this growth is likely due to improvements made to Highway 190 which now allows traffic congestion near downtown Eunice much lessened or eliminated altogether. This improvement not only provides more opportunities for people living in rural areas to get around town but also helps attract tourists who may have otherwise stopped visiting because of roadblocks on their way out of town. Another major factor responsible for this continuing growth is likely due to changes made by both the state legislature and Governor Bobby Jindal himself which have spurred investment and job creation within local communities across Louisiana statewide
Eunice was born on October 12, 1892 in the parish of St. John the Baptist in Louisiana. She was the daughter of Eudocie and George H. (Moses) Eunice. Eunice married John Waddell on May 5, 1916 in the parish of St. Johnsville in Louisiana. They had one child together: a son, John Waddell Jr.
