Eunice is a small town in the Louisiana Purchase area of the United States. It is located on Cane River, about 25 miles east of Lafayette and 40 miles west of New Orleans. The population was 3,500 at the 2000 census. The name "Eunice" comes from French and means "a place where honeybees are kept." The community was founded by white settlers in 1824 as a small village named Euniceville. By 1830, it had grown to include a church and several homes. In 1832, the town was renamed after General James K. Polk, who had served as President of the United States that year. During much of its early years, Eunice functioned primarily as a agricultural center for nearby plantations. However, starting around 1840 it began to become an important manufacturing center for cotton goods and other products associated with the region's growing industry. In 1860, Eunice became one of five towns in Lafourche Parish when it was created from parts of four other villages amalgamated into one entity under this new system of government. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 following racial violence across America, many farmers abandoned Eunice during the ensuing decade-long process of reconstruction that followed. Many residents moved away because they could not compete with newly arrived African Americans working on large cotton plantations or because they were fearful that their own sons would be drafted into military service during those years of postwar reconstruction (1865-1915). Eunice is a small town in the parish of St. Bernard, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge-Altoona-New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. Eunice was founded by French colonists in 1764 as a trading post on White River Bayou and has been home to residents since then. The first European settlement in what is now Eunice was made by Father Jacques Marquette and his party of missionaries in 1756–57. Jesuit Fathers built a fortified outpost here after they had explored the area for two years south of Lake Pontchartrain. From this point on, Father Marquette's missionaries began to spread Catholicism throughout much of Louisiana and eventually founded more than thirty missions in what is now Eunice and neighboring towns including Alexandria, Jeffersonville, Thibodaux, Minden, New Iberia, Shreveport and Monroe. As early as 1802 an act of Congress granted land east of Red River to enable Christianization of the Indians there; it would be ceded to Louisiana by President James Kenedy in 1815 upon acquisition from Spain following its defeat at the Battle of Buena Vista Hill. In 1821 Eunice became part of Rapides Parish when that parish was created from parts of St Tammany Parish and East Carroll Parish; it still falls within Rapides Parish today though its eastern boundary has shifted slightly over time (it now lies just west of Interstate 10). It was not until1846 that local citizens could provide their own courthouse when Judge John Sledge moved from Washington Parish to establish himself here before moving across Red River into Rapides County some time later; he soon named his new courthouse "Eunice" after his wife's birthplace near Amiens Cathedral in Normandy where she had been born about seventeen years earlier (she died there aged ninety-six). Eunice saw heavy military action during World War II with many homes either being destroyed or badly damaged; however no real damage occurred beyond minor repairs which were typically carried out by volunteer members OFDRA - often referred to simply as "the guys". The townspeople took pride however in their rebuilt center which reopened in 1954 thanks largely to donations from local businesses who wanted their name associated with something good rather than Battlefield Boulevard which still remains today despite all efforts by OCFDA - now known as WWNO - to rename it something other than "Battlefield Boulevard". Postwar prosperity brought Growth: A store opened up next door when Highway 59 bypassed town limits (now Interstate 10) In 1955 an auto dealership followed but closed within five years due primarily to high gasoline prices combined with ever-rising competition elsewhere In 1961 Jimmy Carter became Governor & Mayor & revived old downtown business growth spurt culminating with several large projects such as replacing all public schools building--an event celebrated each year since Onward 2nd Street joins I-10 just eastbound off US 94 Business Loop Nowadays nearly every family has at least one pet dog or cat living inside--a trend extending even into Vacationland! &&&&&&&&&&&
