Eunice, Louisiana is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The Eunice Dam is located in the town. The first European to visit what is now Eunice was a French trader named La Salle on October 12, 1699. He named it "Nanterre" after his ship "Nantes", which he had sailed from Brest in Brittany en route to New Orleans. La Salle's map of Louisiana shows that he named the entire parish Eunice (meaning beautiful or lovely). A post office called "Eunice" was established in 1803 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1821, a group ofCreole people led by Captain John Taylor built the first known permanent Anglo-American settlement in what is now Rapides Parish when they founded Baton Rouge on an island east of Baton Rouge Harbor. They named their new community "Eunice". After purchasing land from the local Indian tribe and moving thousands of acres ( hectares) to create their plantation colony, they began construction on what would become known as Bayou Teche Estates; this area became known as Eunice after them. Baton Rouge grew rapidly due to its strategic location between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and its importance as a linking point for both cities during the period before railroads arrived. At its peak occupancy by 1830, Bayou Teche Estates contained more than 200 homes and businesses with an assessed valuation of $30 million dollars ($ million today). In 1872 Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Tatum organized a survey team that mapped much of present-day Rapides Parish including Eunice and discovered two valuable creeks: Cypress Creek flows into Tallahatchie River just south of where modern day Highway 90 crosses it near Thibodaux while Alachua Creek flows into Mobile Bay just north of where US 90 intersects Mobile Street near I-10/US 9 exit 17/exit 8A about 3 miles west of downtown Lafayette. By 1840 most all but 2% (of total acreage) within present day Rapides Parish had been acquired by whites through annexation proceedings following slave auctions conducted under pressure from slaveowners seeking to increase their holdings at a time when slaves constituted less than one percent (0.9%) of the free black population nationally
