Eunice is a small town in the parish of Livingston in the Louisiana Department of Jefferson County, about two miles south-southwest of Baton Rouge. The population was 1,498 at the 2010 census. The first white person to live in Eunice was James Catron. He and his family settled there in 1814 and built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river. In 1846, when Louisiana became an American state, Eunice became part of Rapides Parish. In 1872, it was transferred to Lafourche Parish. Eunice is named for General John Eustace Monroe (1785-1863), who fought against Mexico during the Mexican War and later served as Governor of Louisiana. The town was platted in 1875 by JF King & Company, developers of Alexandria, which had just been founded nearby. A post office called Eunice was established in 1880, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1911. The first school opened in 1907; it continued until 1968. In 1951, St Mary's Episcopal Church became the first Catholic church west of Lafayette; it remains one of the few churches left standing from that era.

Eunice, Louisiana was a small town in the parish of Iberia on the Mississippi River when it was founded in 1803. The name Eunice comes from the Choctaw word "a-nu-i-kuh," meaning "place where there is water." In 1821, Eunice became the capital of Iberia Parish and its seat of government. The first white settler in what is now Eunice was John Gwynn, who arrived in 1800. The town developed around a small fort built by Captain James Wilkinson for his military purposes near present day Frenchtown. A post office was established at Eunice in 1809 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1922. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson made a visit to Iberia Parish and inspected the progress being made by Captains Wilkinson and William Byrd. He ordered that all stores within the parish be closed and their goods transported to Baton Rouge so that they could be sold there without fear of taxation by Ulysses S. Grant's administration. After Jackson's death, General Sam Houston took command of army operations in Texas and ordered Captain Wilkinson to reopen the post at Eunice. A sawmill been erected on High Bridge Road about 1840 which began producing lumber for local homes until 1865 when an approximately 200-acre tract located just east of present day Frenchman also became available for lumbering purposes; this operation continued until 1907 when an oil well gushed out contaminating surface water cutting off valuable production rights thereby eliminating most sources of income for locals). In 1895 Drs Clemens & Waddell opened their general hospital here after years of effort to found one or more similar institutions throughout Louisiana; this hospital would become known as Emory University Hospital (now Emory University School of Medicine) after merging with Atlanta Metro Health System (then known asAtlanta–Fulton County Regional Medical Center) in 1998.) In 1850, Eunice had a population of 105 inhabitants; however during Reconstruction only 16 residents were registered therein because no black people lived there then or since then! There were 14 slaves who worked on plantations outside Iberia Parish including 7 women and 5 children who labored underownership./... Only 8% (27 out OF 351)of registered citizens actually resided inside parish boundaries between 1870 & 1890.; thus less than 1% (3 out OF 351)of total population engaged primarilyin agricultural pursuits /... So much for “the old plantation”: segregationist attitudes towards African Americans seemsto have prevailed even unto post-rebellion times
Eunice, Louisiana was founded in 1812 by French and American traders. The area was first named for the sister of a French trader, Jean Baptiste Duchesne, who had founded the town of Baton Rouge in 1785. Eunice became a Parish in 1821. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson ordered Colonel John Pemberton to take control of the parish from the French version. Pemberton refused and Native Americans attacked his forces. Jackson called for an all-out war with France if necessary to protect America's northwest border, which would have included Eunice as part of it. Aftermath of the battle led to peace between England and France, and Pemberton regained control over Eunice. The early 20th century saw significant growth in Eunice as cotton plantations were developed here. A post office was established at Eunice in 1904, and a black school opened in 1907. The city annexed portions of St Tammany Parish beginning in 1922 when it merged with other parishes around Baton Rouge into one entity known as New Orleans County. In 1940, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Louisiana due to strong winds and rain that caused extensive damage throughout much of the state including parts of New Orleans County.
