It is part of the Baton Rouge-Metairie-Shreveport metropolitan area. Eunice was named for General John Eunice who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Commandant of the National Guard in Louisiana. Founded by French colonists in 1718, Eunice was acquired by Spain in 1803 and then by the United States following its acquisition of Louisiana from France on November 14, 1804. In 1812, it became known as Natchitoches after General James Natchitoches who helped lead a successful military campaign against Mexico during that year's Mexican–American War. In 1819, Eunice became capital of East Baton Rouge Parish when it was established as an independent parish—the first such occurrence in Texas—following annexation by the new state of Louisiana. As a result of its role as parish seat and political center during Reconstruction (1868-77), Eunice experienced some significant growth and development over those years. The post office at Eunice began operations on July 1, 1865; it continued operation until May 15, 1938. During World War II (1939-1945), local businesses supported military efforts with goods and services including munitions production and shipping out to European theaters; after the war ended, many businesses closed down or were converted into apartments or other uses. In 1955, voters passed a ballot proposition ratifying changes made to municipal government within East Baton Rouge Parish resulting from recommendations of a commission chaired by Governor Edwin Edwards which included calls for greater decentralization and control over transportation resources within the parish as well as increased spending on education and public health services among others measures; this change resulted in increased funding for both schools and infrastructure projects across the parish while preserving traditional civil governance functions within each community center ward/districts). In 1957 amendments were passed placing primary emphasis on cultural heritage conservation through designated areas around wetlands impacted by oil refineries; these initiatives are still carried out today with support from various private donors who participate annually in Heritage Conservation District assessments targeting specific areas).
